Help close the "School of Americas"

Jun 06, 2006 12:02

This week, the week of June 5, Congress will vote on an amendment to close The Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (WHINSEC) at Ft. Benning, GA - formerly known as the School of the Americas (SOA). Rep. McGovern (MA) will introduce an amendment to the Foreign Operations appropriations bill to cut funding for the SOA/ WHINSEC!

A close vote is expected so please join me and others in flooding the offices of the House of Representatives with calls & emails in support of a YES vote on the amendment. You can take action as easily as clicking here and sending a pre-written email to your Representatives.

For those of you who haven't heard of the "School of the Americas".... here's a succint description written by the TrueMajority folks:
"Over its 59 years, the SOA/WHINSEC has trained over 60,000 Latin American soldiers in counterinsurgency techniques, sniper training, commando and psychological warfare, military intelligence and interrogation tactics. These graduates have consistently used their skills to wage a war against their own people." A friend of my sister, Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer, wrote a book about the School a few years ago aptly entitled School of the Assassins.

For exhaustive details about the history of this SOA/WHINSEC and their victims, visit School of the Americas Watch.

Every year in mid-November for the past several years nonviolent protesters have gathered at Ft. Benning to call attention to the attrocities that have been done in Latin America by those trained by our taxpayer dollars at this facility. My sister & her kids & some of my close friends have been among the protesters so this is an issue very close to my heart. Please join me in taking action today. Thank you!
