I went to GCF's first Friday fellowship meeting of this semester, and also their last for the semester.
The worship was incredible! Not only was it my first time worshipping in the congregation in a long time (since I play on praise team for church), but it was a really good worship session!! Anna leads it and I love her!, but she was appointed president of gcf for next semester so she is not leading anymore since she'll be too busy to be doing both.
I asked her about joining their praise team on guitar, and she sent me an "application," which is just a questionaire to get to know more about the person joining. I feel like I could write an essay on some of these questions!
Also, when I read about the first semester rule, I had to read it over to make sure I read it right: No playing/singing with them at Friday fellowships for the first two months. I really like the reason they give. It really tests your motivations for joining, at least for me. This policy works for this fellowship because of such a large membership, and also because of the fact that there are so many musicians in the group. It would be easy to throw together anyone to play every week, but this policy helps ensure that people won't play for the wrong reasons.
I'm considering joining but the only thing I'm terrified of is the cliqu-iness of Asian groups. I'll be required to attend gcf every week if I want to join praise team. I wanted to switch between gcf and campus cru every week and not limit myself to being part of one group of people because I really love the people in campus cru too. Cru is incredibly diverse (in more ways than race) and I love that. I don't like limiting myself to spending time with one type of people. Yet no matter whose praise team I join I'll be required to commit my time with that group.
This is an excerpt from the gcf praise team application:
"The First Semester Rule - New members participate in all the meetings and do everything that the other praise team members do except playing/singing in Friday night large group praise for at least the first two months. A rule of this kind has been around for at least 6 years, perhaps even longer but the information is lacking. However, everyone who has gone through that first semester (which is everyone on praise team) agrees that it is a good experience. It taught us a lot about service, about true motivations, about praise, and about humility. We hope you won’t be discouraged by this requirement, as its purpose is far greater than any other experience of being a praise team member. Besides, we’re looking forward to spending time with you"
And these are the questions:
1. Define praise (as relevant to GCF praise team). Why do you praise God?
2. If you were to die tonight, how can you be sure that you’ll go to heaven?
3. If praise team were to have potluck dinner, what would you bring and why? (This is purely for fun’s sake-don’t read too much into it!)
4. Briefly describe how you became a Christian.
5. How well do you know the Bible?
6. What time is it and where are you right now?
7. Describe a possible situation which would cause you to miss a praise team meeting (practice, small group, GCF)
8. Think of a time where it was just hard to worship, when you were overwhelmed by distractions or even felt too worn out or disgruntled to worship. How do you deal with such times?
9. Describe the ideal praise team. Be sure to include the members’ relationships with God, with the other praise team members, and with the rest of the fellowship.
10. What do you like to do for fun? What are some of your favorite movies, bands, etc?
11. Please describe your musical background.
12. Why do you want to join GCF praise team?
13. What other activities do you plan on participating in next semester?
14. Maximum bench press?
15. In what ways do you think that God wants you to grow right now? Be specific.
16. Do you feel that Jesus is the Lord of your life? What does that entail?
I think I will go on with applying. If it's not where God wants me to go, he'll take care of it.
