I was pretty excited when I left school today because we had just gotten our report cards and I did really well. One of the greatest rules in driving is DON'T GET DISTRACTED. Blah. Well, I got in the car turned and turned it on. The music was up a little loud, but it didn't bother me. I saw that I might be able to pull out through the empty space in front of me, but there were two cars on either side of the empty space and it would be alot of work to get out so I decided against it. I went into reverse, quickly looked behind me and started to pull out. I turned around even further to see into a blind spot where a green van had suddenly appeared. I hit the brake, but it was too late. The two cars met nose to rear. I freaked out and pulled up a little and then jumped out of the car. "Oh my gosh, I am SO sorry! I didn't see you, is there any damage??". A blonde women comes out of the car and immediately, it was like and atomic bomb went off "WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?!?! HOW EASY WOULD IT HAVE BEEN TO DRIVE FORWARD AND PULL OUT?? DIDN'T YOU HEAR MY HORN???" I kept saying how sorry I was and that is was entirely my fault, no I didn't hear your horn, is there any damage to your car? "OF COURSE THERE IS DAMAGE! WHY DIDN'T YOU WATCH WHERE YOU WERE GOING?!". She got the police on the phone and after she was done, she wasn't quite through with me.
At this point I was close to tears because this was my first accident since I got my license and things didn't seem to be going to well. So, she gets off the phone and turns to me "And how old are you?" "sixteen ma'am" she throws her arms up in the air "of course". You could just tell what is going through her head "those stupid teenage drivers don't know what the h*** they are doing. so irresponsible...". It turns out that the car she was driving was her mom's, so she had to call her up too. "Yeah mom, I came to pick up (insert girls name here) and this girl backs into me....no, there's not alot of damage, just a little scratch on your car, but her car's brake light chipped, nothing big...yeah, ok, bye". And that was it too. The damage on her car was a little scratch that could have been removed with soap and water. Anyway, the police came, took a look at the damage and left soon after because in his words "I didn't really even need to be here. There isn't alot of damage. The only reason you would need me any longer is if you two want to duke it out". No Thanks. After the lady had calmed down a bit, she apologized for blowing up at me and explained how stressed she was because of the death of someone close. I really couldn't blame her, but I was still about to cry. We exchanged information, and by that time the spaces in front of me had completely cleared and I could pull forward. Out, and away from this disaster
I learned a couple of good lessons though.
1. Never have your stereo up too loud so you cant hear whats going on around you and 2. ALWAYS check EVERY mirror several times before backing out.
