Adam generally tended to avoid making friendly with the children of his compatriots, mostly because he knew he’d have to deal with them in the future, but also just because brats were annoying. But he was deeply considering marrying Kimiko Nakamura.
Okay, that made him sound like a pedophile, but as a tercentennial man, children would become adults in the blink of an eye. Twenty years and she, he suspected, would be the mother of Hiro Nakamura.
How badly would that screw up the time paradox? Adam had been fascinated by time travel sci fi books since The Time Machine. If he one day married the adoring three-year-old trailing after him, what would become of the future or the past? Maybe he’d cease to exist, though he doubted it.
But then he wouldn’t get to fulfill his vow, so Adam was almost relieved when Kaito mentioned in passing that his wife was expecting another child, a boy.
Twenty minutes after the phone call came from the hospital that a healthy Hiro Nakamura had been born, Kimiko found him systematically shredding panel after panel of a paper door into tiny bits.
“Are you leaving, Mr. Monroe?” she asked too gravely for five.
“I’m supposed to be babysitting you.”
“I don’t need a babysitter. Backing out on marrying me?” she twirled a stray strand of hair around her finger like she had seen on TV.
“Maybe. I’ll see you in twenty-five years.” Give or take.
“That’s an awful long time. I might not wait.”
“I’m not asking you to. But if you do, I’ll make you my princess.”
