Hey look, another season 3 flashback to the interregnum. I will eventually write Kyoko's reaction to people constantly feeling the need to tell her these things.

Title: Asking Absolution

She could smell it, the patch of cool dark magic that she could live on for days and the musky rotting scent of fungi that would last much longer. Her nostrils flared in excitement and fear. It was too far down the tunnels for one of the larger gangs but someone must have found it already. Someone must be gnawing those stringy mushrooms and scrapping that glowing algae and sucking the moisture from those rocks.

There. Her nostrils flared again. The other had the resources to feed off of so she’d be fitter. They were all desperate.

She didn’t think; she hungered, like a wild animal with no sentience or words left. It was not worth circling wide and avoiding another predator to live to fight another day; she needed too much.

Hunger. Teeth. Claws. A sister of Yasha, she would have said if she’d still had words. Salty liquid filled her mouth and not even in the heat of the fight would she not swallow it, precious moisture and minerals and life.

The other growled and thrashed and struggled as her claws tore off chunks of flesh and her jaws sank deep grooves into soft tissue, blood pooling around her, being wasted.

She lapped at it as the form under her stilled. It was still twitching, still warm when she started tearing chunks out with her sharp teeth and gorging on them, before someone else found her and stole her kill.

Curling up sated but wary in the patch of dark magic, she licked every last drop of blood and gore off her claws and ignored the picked-clean carcass next to her, even the marrow cracked from the bones.

Well-fed, things approaching conscious thought filtered through her brain. If her Queen Goddess returned she could not beg her forgiveness. She would have to tell the story, though, of how she’d lived. Maybe a Queen could grant absolution, if only the dead could give forgiveness.
