It's a shame that 'Sunday five' lacks the same ring as 'Friday five', but I can never get that organized on a Friday.
1. The first coat of paint is up on the inside of the house. Although it looks slightly different than what I'd imagined in some cases (the purple in the bedroom looking, for instance, quite a bit lighter than I'd thought it would), I'm still very well pleased. Now all I have to do is hope that it goes well with the flooring. And the plywood ceiling. And the window/door trims. And the cabinets. Sigh.
2. The kitchen sink here completely clogged, and after some effort, I gave up and called my sister-in-law (the landlord). She arrived with pipe wrenches and plumber's snakes and soon had it all working again as it ought. I was pathetically grateful.
3. We went downtown last night to have a birthday supper at the Hardware Grill. The weather, for a change, was co-operative enough to let us walk. To my surprise, there was a small festival in the ravine that we passed through. They had small bonfires in ornately cut firebowls and LED lights hanging in paper lanterns. Street performers juggled illuminated balls and pins and small children paraded about with staves with led lights on the end of them. The overall effect was quite enchanting and ethereal.
4. This week I worked up the nerve to actually use some of the tomatoes that I'd canned last summer. They were lovely, and no one died of botulism. I will definitely can tomatoes again, especially since I will have a coldroom where I can conveniently keep such things.
5. This week's new recipe was black bean espresso chili. It's currently simmering on the stove, and I'm rather anxious to see how it turns out. Next time, I think I'll try the smoked tea chili, which also sounds very intriguing.
