Summary: Steve’s having a bad day.
AN: The third piece in a self-issued challenge of 15 fics in the month of October. They are in no way connected, but I’d be thrilled if you did want to read to other fic in the series so far (link below).
AN II: This is because my day was just like this. Without the heroics though.

[Self Challenge]

“God damn it.”

The whole team looked up as a rather worrying crash came from Steve’s office, followed by a stream of colourful language. There were more disturbing sounds and even more cursing as Steve stormed about the small room, either trying to find something or destroy everything he owned, it was hard to tell.

Kono shot Danny a worried look. He sighed, pushing off the table he was working at with Chin. “I’ll go talk to him.”

He knocked on Steve’s door, but didn’t give him a chance to answer before entering his office. “Uh, Steve? You want to tell me why your office looks like somebody shook it like a snow globe?”

“What?” Steve demanded, rounding on Danny rather suddenly.

“Um, why does you office -”

Steve cut him off. “A snow globe? That doesn’t make any sense. Everything’s glued down in a snow globe.”

“Not the snow!” Danny countered, feeling somewhat miffed that Steve was criticising his similes.

“It doesn’t snow in Hawaii Danny,” Steve snapped.

Danny opened his mouth to counter but thought better of it. They seemed to have gotten rather off topic. Maybe he’d be better off just trying again. “Steve, what have you done to your office?”

“I lost some paper work.” Steve picked up a magazine, which was evidently not what he was looking for, because he threw it across the room.

“What paper work?” Danny was seriously considering making a break for it. He’d seen parts of Steve’s file, and had enough firsthand experience to know how well Steve could destroy things.

“A claim form for the Navy. I have to send it in by tomorrow morning, and I had it here, on my desk, all filled in, but I forgot to bring it home, and now, I can’t find it anywhere,” Steve said between riffling through various piles and opening drawers. He grabbed a file folder full of papers and moved to throw it with the magazine but Danny pulled it out of his hands before he could.

“Stop throwing thing! You’re not going to be able to find it if you destroy your office.”

“No, I’ll never be able to find it because it’s not here,” Steve suddenly looked inspired. “The car. It’s probably in the car.”

Danny grabbed Steve before he could make it to the door. “No! You’re not ripping apart the Camaro.” He steered Steve to the couch, forcing him to sit down. “Just take a moment Steve,” he shifted some of the mess Steve had scattered on the couch, sitting down beside him.

“I can’t take a moment Danny, I’ve got to find that form.” Steve made to get up but Danny stopped him with a hand on his shoulder.

“No Steve, you need to take a moment to calm down. You’re not going to find anything if you keep throwing things around the office. Why are you getting so worked up about this?”

“It’s an important form!”

“Oh come on Steve, that’s not it.”

“I’m just having a bad day alright? I got nothing done this morning before I left, and I’m going to have to cancel my dentist appointment because it conflicts with a training thing, and I’ll have to wait another two months for another one. Plus I had a meeting this morning where I just had to sit there and listen to other people bitch and all I could think was that it was just bullshit because we all have problems and they should just grow up and get their shit together.” Steve stopped for a breath as though to continue, but caught sight of Danny’s shocked expression. “I’m just having a bad day Danny. Am I not allowed to have a bad day?” He couldn’t keep the accusation out of his tone.

“Of course you are Steve. But I just don’t think that tearing your office apart is the best way to fix your problem.”

“Well, what would you suggest Danny?” Steve looked affronted.

“Can’t you get a new form or something?”

“That is just really less than helpful.”

Before Danny could say anything Chin knocked on the office door, telling them they had a call they had to respond to. Steve left the room with a huff, leaving Danny in his chaotic office wondering what he was going to do about Steve.

Steve seemed to avoid Danny for the rest of the day. In all fairness things were rather chaotic, with plenty of people to talk to, and the usual world-saving heroics to attend to. Well, possibly not work-saving, but daring and dramatic none the less. When things were finally over and it was time to go home Steve left without much of word to anyone. Danny thought about leaving him alone and trying again tomorrow but in a fit of compassion picked up a case of Longboards and headed over to Steve’s house.

He didn’t knock, and was relieved to find that the door was open. If Steve really hadn’t wanted him there it probably would have been locked. Or rigged to a stun grenade. He found Steve without much difficulty, sitting in the living room, staring at the black TV.

“Uh, hey?” Danny asked, unsure of what to do.

“Hey,” Steve’s voice was flat and he didn’t look at Danny as he sat down beside him. He cleared his throat awkwardly before continuing, “Sorry I yelled at you.”

“That’s okay Steve,” Danny said quietly.

“I called the Navy office. They said I can have another week to send in the form.”

“Well that’s good. Right?”

“Yeah, I guess,” Steve looked over at him, and Danny was a little shocked to see how sad Steve looked, how heavy his eyes seemed. “I don’t feel any better.”

“It wasn’t really about the form Steve,” Danny replied quietly, not wanting to push him too much.

He nodded slowly. “Yeah I know,” he looked away, more uncomfortable than Danny had ever seen him. “I miss my Dad Danny. I just woke up this morning and it hit me out of nowhere.”

For a moment Danny didn’t know what to do, before he grabbed Steve in a tight hug. Steve seemed relieved and hugged Danny back even tighter, burying his face in Danny’s shoulder. They sat like that for a few minutes, Danny running his fingers through Steve’s hair before he sat back up, appearing a little more pulled together.

“Sorry.”

“Don’t apologise Steve,” Danny said firmly. He got two beers from the case, opening both and handing one to Steve. “Tell me about him.”

“What?” Steve looked shocked but Danny didn’t falter.

“Tell me about him.” Danny settled back on the couch. “Tell me anything you want.”

Steve took a long drink of his beer, considering, before settling back beside him and launching into a story. Which lead to another, and then another one after that, and it didn’t seem like long the beer was gone and it was three in the morning and they’d both fallen asleep on the couch.

The next day, despite them both being stiff and more than a little tired, was not a bad day at all.
