Jack Layton

Aug 22, 2011 23:14

Today, a man named Jack Layton died. As those Canadians reading this know, he was the leader of the NDP (New Democratic Party), a socialist party that was recently elected to the official opposition. What's sad is his party has been struggling for years and only just succeeded on a large scale.
While I did vote for his party this year, regardless of your political orientation, his devotion, integrity and moral fibre have to be admired. He was always around his riding of Toronto-Danforth, was said to be available to anyone who needed him, and was a fighter in Parliament and in his life, even though he lost his fight to cancer in the end. He was an amazing man, the epitome of a political leader, and seemed like he would have been at a good time at a party.
Before he died, he wrote a letter to all Canadians, which was beautiful and moving, and ended on a wonderful note:

My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world.

I believe that no matter what we believe in politically, these are important words to live by.
If you want to read the rest of the letter (which I recommend) the link is below.
