So I went to Supanova today (and not in 2012, as I accidentally checked in on Facebook). It was mainly because of Alex Kingston, but also to test how I'd go with crowds at Continuum for a whole weekend, especially as I don't really know anyone who is attending either.
The jury is out on the crowds, especially as I wound up sitting to the side and reading a book for a good hour or so.
Alex Kingston, though, was awesome.
I didn't go for the whole signature or photo thing, and given that she had the queue that never ended I was kind of relieved. I did get a semi-reasonable seat at her panel, though, and her love of the word "spoilers" was all kinds of fantastic. She spoke about things that weren't just Doctor Who (I think the first question was how it felt kissing a man half her age. I face-palmed.) and talked about ER and how surprised she was with how good Lost in Austen wound up looking, given the budget (she was actually almost disappointed with how good it looked, since it meant that budgets would continue to be cut and people still expect the finished product to look as good as stuff that had a much higher budget).
Also, she prefers wearing corsets to jeans, and would choose to be stranded on Gallifrey (I think the question was Gallifrey, it was a very echoey venue and some questions were very hard to catch -- and her answers when it started bucketing down rain ("I thought we were taking off!")) with Matt Smith to a desert island with George Clooney.
And there was a grade 2 teacher -- I actually was on the same tram as her on the way back into the city -- who wanted a video of her saying hello to her class (her students get in the TARDIS for her Australian history lessons, and she uses Doctor Who characters in her lesson sheets etc) and Alex Kingston got into a good little discussion with her on using Doctor Who in the classroom.
She talked a bit about the current popularity of Doctor Who in the USA, like when she drops her daughter off at school and the kids start screaming -- in a good way -- and finding herself as role model of sorts.
I took my old camera in with me, hoping to get some photos, but did I mention the "old" part? I didn't want to drag in my DSLR, though, and my direct view was partially obscured by a very good Maleficent cosplayer's horns.
(There was also someone in there at the back dressed as a Silence -- which are one of Alex Kingston's two scariest villains, the other being the Weeping Angels -- and when people realised this, I don't think anyone actually listened to her very good response on the filming location for Time of the Angels and Flesh and Stone, and the Forest of Dean and what it was like in Stonehenge. Which is a pity because it was very good -- from what I can remember, because, y'know, there was a Silence in the background. I don't think I saw this person again.)
