I had so much fun yesterday! Josh and I went to the Washington County Fair in Richmond (at least I think we were still in Richmond). He told me that it's the biggest thing that happens in town all year and that it really is just a buncha hicks. I thought he was exaggerating because, well, he and his family are not rednecky and no one else I've met from the area was really over the top... But it turns out he wasn't kidding. There were, in all seriousness, people with cowboy hats and missing teeth. And the crowd watching the tractor races was 6 or so people thick! There was a long line of people waiting to go into the chicken coop to see all the prize-winning chickens. The blue-ribbon pigs had signs above them "If you want to fill your freezer this fall, call Bill xxx-xxxx." There was even a stall with a confederate flag waving, which just boggled my mind. But there was live music, and a carnival area, and so many tents with people selling a variety of things. I just absorbed all of it. Mind you, there were regular things for sale too, like sundresses/jewelry, airbrush tattoos, local art, etc. But there was one guy who uses a table saw to carve designs into pieces of wood (i.e. benches, plaques, coat pegs). He was really talented. The rides in the carnival area were really expensive, so we didn't go on any ($4 for the ferris wheel?! I think not). We each played a couple of the carnival games, but all we managed to win is a tiny stuffed tiger. It's cute, though. Then, that night we went to The Mews for dinner, but stumbled upon a random block party on the way. We had to go on a crazy detour to get to the restaurant, but even that was funny. We stopped at the party on the way home and got some ice cream at Brickley's. It was SO GOOD. I had never been there, and Josh said it was just one of those things you just have to try. He was right. :D Anyway, I had a blast. Yay.
