Thursday morning I arrived at labs slightly worse for wear, having been up until around 3am drinking rum, Baileys and wine. Not all in the same glass.
But what a difference! For Activity D we had a tutor called Peter who was an old-school lecturer. Before each part of the experiment he demonstrated the technique, showed us how to handle the equipment and gave us tips and tricks to make things easier. When he showed us how to use a pipette there was an audible 'aha!' from around the room. If only we had known that earlier in the week! He was so full of enthusiasm and totally inspirational. What a lovely man.
The activity proceeded all that day and the following morning without a trace of panic, pressure or other unpleasantness. He was happy to answer questions and did his best to explain the theory, unlike my group tutor who said when I asked her 'I'm just trying to work it out'. I really enjoyed this activity even though the theory was slightly baffling in places.
On Thursday night the usual crowd gathered outside the bar and had a few drinks before heading off to the disco at the Union. The DJ didn't quite get it right at first, but soon got into the swing with lots of cheesy disco, ABBA, the Time Warp and Tainted Love to name but a few. An awful lot of tequila was consumed (I think nine measures, but I lost count), a lot of embarrassing dancing perpetrated, and a lot of having to go outside to cool down.
At 1.30am the disco finished and around 2 Andy and I started to wander home. We got lost quite a lot. I don't remember all of the journey but I do remember skipping up a path arm in arm singing Follow The Yellow Brick Road, lying under a tree in a meadow somewhere, examining a hole in the road and pretending to be Bernard Cribbins, and trying to steal a small road roller (but the owners had inconsiderately removed the keys). We met up with some of the others and continued carousing until... well I know it was after 3.30am and Andy reckoned it was about 4.30am. Ooops.
After two hours' sleep I was woken by people crashing about with their cases (probably in revenge for all the nois we were making the night before) and it time to pack, breakfast and finish off in the labs.
After lunch there were fond goodbyes. I took Bernie, Jerome and Nigel to the station and then came back to look after Sarah, who had not had any sleep at all. She'd only been driving a few months and there was no way I was going to let her drive home to Hull in that state, so I drove her home, which was an excellent excuse to visit
ramtops and
perlmonger .
Had a fantastic Lebanese takeaway that night and then a really good sleep. Saturday we went to see the sights of Hull, including the public conveniences and a food festival, where I bought a bucket and other things. It's a very nice bucket :)
Drove home in the late afternoon and was very pleased to see Tabitha and Zebedee.
Glad to be home :)
