Its just an unfortunate thing.... but yes I think the whole "global warming" thing is in a way causing stuff like this. Our environment is changing.
We haven't had decent rain here for YEARS.... we've been on permanent water restrictions in this state for years (Haven't been allowed to water lawns for a few years, and we're restricted to watering only at certain times and days - when we're allowed to water..) Our drinking water catchment areas haven't been even up to half full for years... Obviously it's worse in summer, as it's hot and dry in summers down here.
Because it's been so dry, the forests (we call it "bush") is so dry it's a perfect situation for the fires, and it travels so fast because the grass is sparse and dry. And that day just happened to have been the hottest day in record in this state... and there were hellish winds. The absolute worst day, weather-wise, that it could possibly have been.
Which is why so many people were caught unaware.... the fire travelled so fast, and then the problem of the wind changing and blowing the fire into previously "safe" areas.
but then as a cruel twist of fate.... up in North East Australia they are having massive flooding problems.... Its crazy how somewhere can be several metres under water, while on the other end of Australia we haven't had enough rain to fill our water catchment areas. But then that's a more tropical climate and their wet season is in summer...
