“Should be easy to find him once we learn who she is,” Callahan, who sat to Rossi’s right, stated. The senior agent and the rest of the team were on the plane, heading for Boulder City.

Across the table that separated the row of seats he saw Hotch staring down at the case file in his hands. “That’ll be our first objective when we land. We should also build a suspect pool based on boat ownership,” the supervisor addressed the team, before he turned to their youngest sitting at his left side and asked, “How many boats are there on Lake Mead?”

“1,908,” came the answer after a second of pause where Reid’s gaze was focused upwards. Rossi’s mind registered the number but it held no interest to him other than the fact that they had a lot of work ahead of them.

That was until he heard Callahan retorting in a tone that was more challenging than surprised, “Come on, you just know that?”

It got everyone’s attention.

Even though it was hardly the first time that someone questioned Reid’s abilities. On a regular basis there was some member of law enforcement who made fun of it or worse. The team dealt with it by effectively intervening - in Rossi’s case preferably with a sarcastic comment. And it didn’t even stop there; they defended Reid against each other among the team as well.

Because it wasn’t the first time a team member did it, either. And while it was mostly Morgan who voiced it, there had been a point where each one of them had felt the urge to do that; Rossi was sure of it.

He still vividly remembered the first time he had been on the receiving end. It had been equal parts disbelief that someone just knew stuff like this and surprise that everyone else just seemed to accept it as a fact. Though he had been more of an observer back then than a team player, or maybe because of it, even he hadn’t challenged the young man. He had learned early on that Reid really knew all these things. So he had stopped to wonder if what the man said was right. It just was.

Rossi wondered what Callahan’s reasons were to do it all of a sudden. After all, she was on the team for some time now, enough to get familiar with it.

“Yeah, there are 1,908 boats on Lake Mead,” the agent in question answered, no trace of resentment in his voice as Dave noticed. It sounded like Reid thought that a simple repeat would end it all. Rossi had to smile at this naivety.

As he had thought Callahan didn’t let Spencer of the hook, “Where’d you get that number?”

This was getting interesting now. It appeared that she really wanted to clear this once and for all. But then she was a rather direct person.

Rossi reached in his jacket’s upper left pocket to retrieve his cell phone. At some point it might be good to have the number in black and white. Beginning to type in the search words he still followed the conversation.

“Uh, based on the population density of the area I,” Reid hesitated just a second before he added, “estimated.” Evidently it was now clear to him what Callahan was driving at, too.

Not surprisingly this admittance only fueled her cause. “You guessed,” she clarified before addressing the rest of the team. “I mean, is this guy really a genius, or does he just say things with authority and we all believe him?” With a smug grin on her face she looked at the young profiler, daring him to disprove her.

Again not surprisingly it was Morgan who sided with her. “Oh well, thank you. Ten years,” he bumped fists with the female agent, “it took ten years for someone to finally have my back. All right, Einstein, she just called you out. Bring it.”

Or maybe it was surprising. While Derek was the first to utter similar complaints Dave had pegged him for also being the first to defend Reid. So who was he really leading on here?

Sifting through the results on the phone’s screen, the senior agent only had the man’s voice to go by which didn’t give it away. It didn’t matter though since he had just found what he was looking for and was ready to end it all at any time if need be.

For the moment though Rossi chose to simply watch this playing out. Even if it was two against one now, he didn’t wanna interrupt just yet.

Because he was curious to see how Reid was handling this. From the look on his teammates’ faces so were they. Even Hotch, who normally ignored quarrels like this, gave his full attention.

From experience Dave knew to expect a long-winded and fast-paced explanation about the relation of boats and people in different states or something equally scientific. Despite having proven his abilities time and again, the young man always seemed to find the need to defend himself.

So Rossi was surprised to hear only three words as Reid’s reply. “Look it up.” And more than that, Spencer sounded almost amused, definitely not like he had just been challenged.

It proved that the man had grown up a lot and had gotten more confident in the last few years. Taking this as his cue, Dave now entered the conversation.

With his gaze still on the screen he uttered, “I am.” Making a pause for pure dramatic reasons, he kept his face neutral and tried to sound the same as well.

He made a point of looking up and directly at Reid as he announced, “And the kid’s right.” Rossi briefly threw their superior a short glance and saw his amusement mirrored in the man’s eyes.

A sigh made him look over to Morgan, seeing the man hanging his head in defeat. Out of the corner of the eyes he caught the quick smile on Spencer’s face that also was noticeable in his voice as the man addressed his female colleague. “I accept your apology.” It was meant playfully and Callahan’s own smile showed that she had understood it.

Having that settled they went back to the case.

And Rossi mused that maybe there was no need for them to defeat Reid in the future anymore. The kid seemed more than capable of handling that himself.
