A Walk Down Memory Lane: Danse de Noel
This is the first year since I was 17 that I won't be attending the Debutante Ball. Now, granted, even if I were home, I probably wouldn't go this year. It's more for college students than recent graduates. Last year was the last year that I could consider any of the debutantes friends. A few girls who were freshmen my senior year of high school debuted. Still, it's weird to think that I won't be attending an event that's become an annual tradition for me.
Senior year. Kimi, Madison, and I went to the ball with Harry, Cory, and Jim. Our moms worked together to prepare dinner, and we ate at Kimi's house beforehand, taking our pictures there too. I borrowed a dress from a girl from church, Madison wore her pageant dress, and Kimi bought a new dress. I knew some of the girls who debuted through dance team. They had been juniors my freshman year.
Freshman year. Kimi, Madison, and I went to the ball with Brantley, Cory, and Jim. Harry ate with us as well, but he went with Jana. I borrowed another dress from the same girl, and I think Madison and Kimi both bought new dresses, but I'm not sure. Kathryn debuted that year. :) I went to her wedding this summer. Time flies!
Sophomore year. My debut!!!! Easily one of the best nights of my entire life. Russell was my escort. :) Kimi couldn't come, but Madison, Aimee, Rachel, Katie, and Jim all came with Cory, a date, Simon (a mutual friend of ours, since Luke was deployed), Tripp, and Allison (Jim's on-again, off-again girlfriend at the time). Harry came with Christie, and Jeremy was there too, although without a date. Grandma B and Aunt Kari flew in from Denver. Uncle Marshall came, and so did Jane and Jack from church, my unofficial godparents. Words don't describe what an amazing evening it was. I have the best friends ever. Tripp didn't even go to Kathryn's ball the year before, but when I asked him if he would be Katie's date, he agreed. When I thanked him, he said "Anything for a sister." Melt! Russell was perfect, of course, and we spent the entire night dancing.
Oh, and of course, I had a new dress that was all my own, and perfect!!!
Junior year. Just Russell and I went. I prepared dinner for my whole family, even though only my parents and Russell & I were attending the ball. I had just gotten back from France, and it was my first time seeing Russell in months. I borrowed a dress from Katie. We talked and danced all night long. His girlfriend at the time was very gracious to let me borrow him for the evening. :) Of course, she is one of my best friends, and she trusted me.
Senior year. Again, just Russell and I went. I prepared dinner for all of us again. I borrowed another dress from Katie, and my mom let me wear her diamond and sapphire necklace!! He had graduated from Furman at this point, so we didn't see each other as often, and we probably talked more than danced, enjoying the chance to catch up. Afterward, we went back to my house, planning to go the the typical after-party, but Harry and several of our friends were at my house when we arrived, so we just hung out, had a few drinks, and played Wii. It was also the first time I'd seen Matt in almost a year.
Last year. McPhee and I went with Caroline and Harry. It was Jeremy's first year to attend properly, with a date and everything! I wore a brand-new dress, a gorgeous black gown that I bought in France. Yup, I'm that cool. We danced a bit, but mostly the four of us just hung out and talked. I ran into only a handful of friends, but they all wanted to hear about France. I love talking about France. Afterward, we all went back to Harry and Jim's apartment where we met up with Matt. If I'm only going to see my friends a few times a year, I guess they should see me at my best!
This year? I'll be hanging out with a different Katie in Niort on December 27. Weird.
Picture spam. Brita over the years!!!
