Pure, unadulterated FLUFF
Summertime means one thing:
BOOKS. And lots of books. I'm talking seven since Saturday, and most of yesterday was spent in Greenville. (p.s. My gastroenterologist took me off my meds for Crohn's! Yay remission!!!) And lots of reading means it's time for book reviews.
Let's start with the sugary fluff. Meg Cabot's books. Love them. Pure, sweet fun. Lots of of high school kids who actually think they know what it means to be in love. Real feel-good stuff. So if you're looking for a book to occupy a few hours at the beach or pool, then try Pants on Fire, which is about a girl who loves kissing guys but discovers what it means to only want to kiss one guy, Avalon High, which is about King Arthur's court recreating itself in modern times, or Teen Idol, which is about a girl who has to help a popular male actor learn what it means to attend a real high school.
They're all totally unrealistic, of course, but that's what makes them fun. Avalon High was probably my favorite. The main character is so likeable, and I think a lot of girls can probably relate to her. Cabot does a good job of putting the legend in a modern context, and I really like how she uses the reincarnation as a battle between good and evil.
If you don't have a lot of time to read, look into a collection of short stories. I just read Prom Nights from Hell, which tells five paranormal prom stories. They were okay. One was a little creepy, but also totally predictable, since it was essentially a retelling of "The Monkey's Paw." The others weren't creepy at all. One didn't even really make sense. The best is by Stephanie Meyer, called "Hell on Earth."
None of these books are worth buying if you're out of high school, but they're definitely worth checking out from the library. If you're still in high school and you tend to reread books like I do, consider buying Avalon High or Teen Idol. I've read the latter two or three times over the last six years or so.
