Obliterative nostalgia

There is currently a backhoe destroying the in-ground swimming pool across the street from us. I got to watch them dismantle part of the fence, gently pluck two small trees/shrubs out of the opening, carefully drive through this new opening up to the edge of the pool, put down the side feet, and then lay into the top edge of the pool wall like it had just insulted their mom.

They appear to be going around destroying the top lip of the pool. They just casually pushed the diving board aside as it made a screeching metal noise.

The pool looks like it was extremely expensive once upon a time, but I've never seen it filled or maintained let alone in use the time we've lived here. The couple who's house it is appears to be older, with all their kids moved out, and grand-kids sometimes visiting and playing in the yard.
