"Yes, I would go back if they asked me. My stance always is I would love to come back. In fact, they have trashed John so fucking much on that show that I would like to come back just to set the record straight the real way, I’m not that bad of a dad. I saved my kids. I went to hell to save my kids. How bad can I be, people? But there are a couple

God, I know! I like Mary, but having John be there would be a different kind of torture entirely. And it's all about torturing them as much as possible.
Yay, I'm not alone in the Loved his kids and still sucks at the whole dad gig camp. I love it when that happens. :)
Personally, I think that the Crusade To Avenge Mary was really only a crutch to keep John (and Dean, to a lesser extent) going after a certain point. It was about keeping them alive and giving them the tools to survive in a world where one of his sons is apparently destined to be used by the dark side. And if that makes him the bad guy, I don't think John would have too much of a problem with that. You can certainly argue about his methods and...uhm...general emotional stability, but at the end of the day Dean and Sam are alive and Adam is a dead angel condom who got eaten by ghouls and gets to spend eternity with Lucifer.
Anyway, yes he needs to be back. I'm available for brainstorming sessions should the writers ever come calling :P

I also think you're right about it just being a crutch because really how do you go back to your normal life knowing that there is evil out there that 1 - your kids need to know how to protect themselves against and 2 - could you just ignore it and let loads of innocent people die when you could have stood up and made a difference? Neither Dean nor John could do that, I don't think, they're heroes to the core.
Count me in for those brain storming sessions and if the writers would like to have Jensen Ackles sitting in the corner, I'm SURE that would help my brain storming abilities, lol.
