What’s hard for Tim to remember, when Dick’s been in Mt. Justice for a while without coming home to Gotham, is how quickly Dick orients himself to Bruce. How quickly he turns to Bruce. Dick’s a more capable leader, much more personable leader, more...everything leader than Bruce, but the moment Bruce is in the room, Dick...almost deflates, in a way. He takes his spot behind Bruce, makes himself available to Bruce first before the rest of the League. Before Barbara, and Tim.
It’s hard to remember that Dick belongs to Bruce first.
It’s not as simple as wearing Bruce’s mark in some way. It’s not as simple as saying Bruce is...Dick’s master, in some weird, screwed-up, BDSM-y way. Well, there could be aspects of that there, but Tim really doesn’t want to think about that. In any way.
It’s the way Dick’s voice breaks, just a little, when Bruce bids them farewell so he and the other five Leaguers can go try to clear their name halfway across the galaxy. It’s the way he just looks so...lost, for a moment, like someone suddenly lacking their anchor. It’s in the way Barbara reaches out to him, and he flinches, a little blindly, like for a moment he can’t recognize anyone around him.
It’s what’s to be expected when the person has been a constant in your life for half your life, Tim reflects just a little sadly. Bruce and Dick have relied on each other for many things, and Dick-needs Bruce in a way Tim can’t comprehend.
But then, he needs Dick, so maybe he can.
