I was listening to the song "Wild Side" by Motley Crue and I was inspired suddenly to write an entry about maturity and adulthood. I was thinking about the issue for a while and I had to do a bit of reflection.
What defines maturity? A dear friend of mine informed me in casual conversation that one of her mother's friends does not view her as an adult due to the fact that she still lives at home and she's in her 20's like myself. I don't find that living with your family defines maturity. Many reasons could back this claim up and one large factor that comes into play is financial reasons. Being a contributing member of society does not mean being out on your own either. Again, there are many factors that come into play.
We as members of society through many forms could range from working a normal nine to five job which is impossible or near obtainable in today's economy, a voting member to the political game, or a student that is working hard to maintain a GPA to get into college. I am compelled to give an apology to Rose in an earlier entry when I had told her that she wasn't a contributing member. It was wrong of me and rather presumptuous. To the matter at hand, maturity isn't defined by a job, clothes one wears or where they live. Maturity is defined by the state of mind one holds and even then, the degree of maturity differs from person to person through familial cultural standards. Maturity could be defined through a degree of discipline, dedication or how one views the world around them. However, this is not a complete picture of how one matures. Social factors, academic standards and various other forms of influences could be a mark on how one matures. Experience alone does not define maturity.
The transition from adolescence into adulthood is not clearly defined. Clothing, finances, friends or the lack thereof, cars and property an adult does not make. Those are superficial milestones that defines one into the state yet the maturity and social decorum could severely lack. Maturity and adulthood are defined on so many levels and as I had stated above, it is how we are raised that could harm or help us grow to become successful adults. Self esteem, self awareness and self confidence plays a huge role in our growth as adults.
It's fear that pulls us back into our child-like states at times that cause us to cower in corners when we are confronted. This could be due to lack of self worth that has not been learned effectively. Freeing ourselves from the bonds of fear to overcome our challenges no matter how small reflect how we meet challenges when we are on our own.
On the other hand, one could be on their own and not have a mature mind. These people lack responsibility and are often in debt. Some lead superficial lives that often revolve around property such as expensive clothes, cars and jewelry, social gatherings such as clubs and drinking to excess and often times land in a lot of legal trouble. When these people become members of society, they often make ill informed decisions and many job hop. Some eventually find themselves unemployed and bitter later in life while blaming others for their faults and taking the blame onto themselves.
Maturity, by my definition which could vary from person to person, is the ability to accept responsibility for actions and work to not repeat those mistakes. Holding a grudge does not define maturity. It shows a lack of and that could be dangerous later.
