Journal Day? Again?

Sometimes I'll be doing something, like just now as I was inking a little comic panel drawing, and I'll get a flashback to one of the things Ron and I did on our UK trip. Today it was a flashback to the time in Chester, when we accidentally discovered the Roman colosseum ruins in the middle of the city. They happened to be right next to the car park. The whole ruin was below ground level, because apparently dust settles, and settles, and settles, and eventually everything is underground. One of the entrances had been totally blocked up with rocks, supposedly done by a warlord taking up residence in the colosseum ruin after Rome left. It was very surprising to me the influence of the Roman empire on the UK, and was something I didn't expect going over there. There were a lot of Roman ruins. Then there were a lot of washed out castle skeletons that had once been converted into jails. Then there were a lot of post-1700 buildings and things that weren't ruins. One of the most striking things about the UK was how you can drive along the highway and see castles and tower ruins at almost every turn, just sitting there, on farmer's lots. Also Ireland, but not as much.

Probably the most fabulous castle we went to see was Edinburgh Castle, but it was too crowded and people with serious B.O. kept going in the enclosed places and stinking them up. Ugh! Though Edinburgh is gorgeous, in a way I liked Glasgow better, because it was more genuine. Edinburgh is set up for tourism, but not Glasgow. It's just Scotland as it is. We wandered around Glasgow for an afternoon and evening (it didn't get dark until like 10:30 there), some parts of it were vaguely scary and run down but NOTHING like American cities. We felt pretty much super safe there. Some parts of Dallas scare the heck out of me at high noon.

Ron is gone this week in Orlando and I'm suffering from ennui. He called and said the leadership team said we can move anywhere in the east. It's really hard to decide where to move when you can move anywhere. And Ron is always changing his mind. It drives me crazy to have no idea where I'm going to be in a year. Oh well. I'm tired today after running 4 miles, and it is making me kind of crabby. Naptime!
