how do you feel about all of these big-named designers doing lines for major discount chain stores? i just read today's daily candy about Abaeté doing a line for Payless Shoes. isn't it still crap produced in crappy conditions in some crappy sweatshop??? isn't that one of the reasons we like fancy designers?...because designer items are produced by

this is obviously a very complicated issue, however i think that part of the problem with designers creating clothes for mass produced lines is that people buy them as some sort of status symbols. it doesn't necessarily have to do with the actual item. this idea of 'masstige' that is being propagated by the upper class is simply a means to make us but more crap.
people are easily lured in by low prices (witness, forever 21). the matter of whether or not an item will last becomes irrelevant because people know they can simply go back to, old navy, target, etc. and buy something new a few months later for $15.
there is a lack of understanding, much less appreciation, for craftsmanship; mass production has marred the landscape of quality products. standards of quality have become so low across the board that i don't think people are even aware of what they're missing most of the time.
i buy more expensive, well crafted items (when i don't simply thrift shop) for the same reason i buy my expensive hippie food, because in the long run it is worth it.

funny how shopping at thrift stores can actually give you a lesson in how to spot quality materials and workmanship. if you have a good eye, you can find stuff that is over 50 years old and will hold up for at least another 20! i know that a wool suit made in the 40's is far superior to even a high-end suit made today. and certainly none of this crappy H&M stuff is gonna make it to 2056!
