On the Value of Philosophy

Jun 18, 2007 14:07

One of my philosophy profs, Dr. Patzia told me the following story (he didn't include the sarcastic details, but I enjoy elaborating):

One day, the aspiring young grad student and his colleague went to a Eastern American Philosophical Association conference to start job hunting. A number of west coast heavy hitters and a thousand plus academics rubbed shoulders and swapped trivia or argued about whatever they happened to be studying at the time. Patzia looked out at the crowd, turned to his friend and told him that if the ceiling collapsed and every single person at the conference died, the world wouldn't lose anything of significance.

Nasty stuff coming from a philosophy prof.
