[Review] Tenimyu 3rd Season Seigaku vs St. Rudolph, TOP 5 moments

Oct 08, 2015 02:59

Hey guys!

So, I thought it’d be about time I share some of my thoughts and opinions of my TOP 5 moments in the new Seigaku vs St. Rudolph. I didn’t see it too many of the shows, I guess, but four times could be enough for me to recall much of the musical. This was really hard cause I often mixed up 1st and 2nd Season sometimes! 1st Season’s More Than Limit is perhaps my second or third favorite 1st Season musical whereas 2nd Season’s Seigaku vs St. Rudolph-Yamabuki wasn’t so much for me (due to the combining of the two musicals).

But FIRST!
WARNING: If you don’t want to be spoiled of the SETLIST and/or who sings what songs… SKIP ALL OF THIS

Here’s a rough outline of the songs and music in this musical. It was confirmed beforehand that there would be 7 new songs, therefore the official titles of the new song are not yet known (unless some of ya’ll have insider info lol). So, the songs with the asterisk signify what I assume to be a new song and I gave it my own make-shift title just from lyrics I could vaguely understand or hear.

I’m just gonna share my TOP 5 favorite things about this musical or else I might keep on rambling and end up spoiling the whole thing!

TOP 5 moments (in no particular order)

Dream Come True - This is the instrumental we hear from More Than Limit as the ending dance sequence. Right now, I can’t recall where else they’ve used this instrumental song. But, this musical OPENED with this song and the moment the curtains rose to this song, I was hit with so many feels. This song is close to my heart because it’s one of the dance sequences I learned to dance with my siblings with the hopes of performing it on stage. So, I was definitely watching and listening to it a lot. This new opening sequence really hit my Tenimyu AND Tenipuri heart when they started projecting the individual manga character shots. Then, the live characters would run on stage and mimic the pose on screen. Seigaku regulars got their individual poses while Fudomine and St. Rudolph had team poses. I loved it so much. It comforted me to know that Tenimyu doesn’t forget its deep roots in The Prince of Tennis.

Double Doubles - I definitely loved the way that 3rd Season handled the fact that Doubles 1 and Double 2 matches were going on at the same time. In both 1st and 2nd Season, each match had their own music to suit the game then the pairs would run on and off stage or freeze in place while the others play. 3rd Season took it to another level, in my opinion. At the height of the clash of matches, there was the use of screen projection, moving box platforms, and the music and sounds. I have a hard time putting it into words so I hope that when the musical comes out on DVD, it translates in how visually and aurally appealing I found it to be.

Golden Pair songs - Okay, so first I’ll put it out there that I’m not a fan of the Golden Pair; I like Oishi to an extent and I could tolerate Kikumaru. 1st Season and 2nd Season’s Depend on Me and Juuden Kanryo are rather iconic for GP songs while being solos as well. I expected and hoped GP to get new songs but I was worried if they could live up to the previous ones. I was very much not disappointed. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the songs. Despite the struggle Ishida Shun’s voice has to sing and dance at the same time, Oishi’s new song, which I call Dreamer, is really nice to listen to. Then, there is Honda Reo’s real-life Kikumaru doing Charge Up, another new song that I hope will be titled similarly. Charge Up is among my favorite solo songs in this musical. While I owe it to Reo’s execution of it, the lyrics and tune are so catchy. It’s even the curtain call instrumental song too!

Tachibana vs Shishido - This probably sounds like a rather big spoiler but it’s not too much of one! This is a quick scene but it definitely caught me off guard! Here, we get a few seconds of that fateful match between Fudomine’s Tachibana and Hyotei’s Shishido (yes, still with the ponytail). Tachibana isn’t impressed with Hyotei’s noisy cheer call, Shishido’s underestimation of his capabilities, and how quick the match ended with his victory. I just loved this scene because it makes us look forward to Hyotei and it reminds us of Fudomine’s fighting strength as they strive to make to the National Tournament. By the way, Tachibana was playing against an actual Shishido; an actor in the Hyotei uniform! I can’t confirm whether the actual casted actor for Shishido was actually playing him or if it was a random, but it’s exciting!

Nomura Takuya - When it was announced that they would be adding Nomura Takuya to the St. Rudolph team this musical, I was ecstatic! It’s very minor when it comes to game play and even significance in the team, but St. Rudolph is one of my favorite teams so all of the team members hold a special place in my heart. I also find the actor, Sagawa Daiki, particularly adorable in his portrayal of NomuTaku, as he’s affectionately called. In the opening shows, his first spoken lines are about how it’s his first appearance that received a warm welcome of applause from the audience. I think my favorite scene is where Fuji Yuuta is practicing his rallying against a wall while NomuTaku stands against the wall and prays that he avoids all the incoming balls. NomuTaku is as flaily, pathetic, and adorable as I love and expect him to be. NomuTaku still needs to learn that ‘Otouto’ is definitely not Yuuta’s favorite nickname because Yuuta has no qualms when it comes to picking on his senpai. In other words, Yuuta would give a good noogie to NomuTaku’s head.

Honorary moments… no detailed comments but

Turn Taka-san, Turn - Takikawa Koudai plays a pretty funny self-pitiful Taka-san.
Kaneda’s Rawr - I like how Kamimura Kaisei yells.
Dream Maker - Tezuka, get on that bus. Wait, was that Kamio? Oh hey, a bike-snatcher.
Inui vs Mizuki - Bringing back a classic. Gotta love that Data.
Now & Forever - Uniforms and all the boys as you mentally sing along.
Bakuhatsu Dubstep - Tenimyu getting with the times.

A Few Let-Downs

Yuuta’s solo - Stop yelling at us.
Little spotlight on Fudomine - Downsides of a black uniform...
No Yanagisawa/Kisarazu love - Imagine the possibilities on giving them a duet.
Momoshiro vs. Kaidoh - Wished the punchline could snap as easily as a rubber band.
Nomura Takuya - Missing out on that Tezuka vs. Nomura match that will never happen.

Overall, I really enjoyed this musical! I enjoyed the boys’ efforts on stage and Tenimyu’s touch-ups on the musical. I felt like it was closer to the 1st Season musical but what they kept from the 2nd Season was nice too. Some elements were weaker in 3rd Season compared to 2nd Season in a few characters, scene, and musical numbers, but no show is perfect! And, again, these are just my thoughts and opinions running on my own biases and interpretation of things.

If anyone has any other questions about some parts or anything else they would like discussed… feel free to throw it at me! I love chatting about Tenimyu~ XD
