CHARACTER NAME | Hope Estheim
CHARACTER SERIES | Final Fantasy XIII
CANON POINT | Chapter 12; on their arrival in Eden
DESIRED CLASS & REASONING | Adept Rouge → Shadow Warlock/Harvest Cleric
Both classes are basically making light of the fact Hope has the highest magic stat out of all the party members in the game and this makes him quite adept in the roles that focus on magic, it also mimics two roles that Hope majors in; Ravager which compromises of offensive elemental magic and Medic which compromises of curative magic.

BACKGROUND | FFXIII - Hope
PERSONALITY | “It’s my name, not who I am.”

Though named for a virtue, it is one that he sometimes has trouble believing in. But it’s one that slowly-through the events he witnesses and the new bonds he forms that he slowly comes to understand. When Hope is first seen he is unsure, sensitive, naïve, skittish kid who is both scared and hostile to everything that is happening to and around him. Hope’s only comfort-really his strength, is his mother, who he watches die before his very eyes. Rather pessimistic and always seeing the bad before the good, this goes from bad to worse when he is made into a l’Cie by the fal’Cie Anima. l’Cie were the enemies of Cocoon, to everyone in the world. Being marked with the brand was basically being marked for death. They are monsters. And now he was one of them… already he had lost his mother, now he had lost everything else he had ever known and loved.

It’s in this early time that Hope gives into his anger and despair over the situation, questioning the group’s decision to attack Anima and even going as far to blame Snow and Serah for what had happened to them. Just as quickly though, when Snow snaps back at him, his mood sifts back to a scared kid. Terrified by his thoughts, more than once he was willing to give up, sit down and let the Sanctum come and take him.
After all, what other options did he really have? Completing his Focus and becoming a crystal or failing and then becoming a real monster in the form of a Cie’th.

Some vacation this turned out to be, huh?

So more or less, Hope does is not left with a lot of choice but to mature and grow up a lot faster than he probably planned on. It is Lightning that helps Hope bring down his initial wall, but this brings out another side of Hope-someone full of hate. Hope loathes Snow, he blames Snow for his mother’s death because she died helping him. And sadly, Lightning’s dislike of her sister’s fiancé probably helped this fester a bit as Hope did begin to look up and almost mimic Lightning’s way of thinking and acting.

And even at his young age, he wanted to kill Snow-he tried very hard to, but it is in the time after that Hope really does grow and mature when he realizes that Snow is trying the hardest he possibly can. That someone that risked their life to save his-someone that had so much hate for him-couldn’t have purposely allowed his mother to die. He admits that he knew that doing that would not bring his mother back but he had to blame someone because it was the only thing keeping him going at the time.

In the moment he declared Operation Nora a failure is he finally able to move on from his revenge and instead fight for hope instead of hate.

It has also been shown that Hope is incredibly thoughtful and caring for his new friends. When his brand beings to react, causing him to even lose conscious, he tells them to go on without him and even though both Snow and Lightning come to his side, telling he will not be alone in this ordeal he admits that is what scares him; he does want to them to get hurt because of him. He even breaks down in tears, saying it would be better for everyone if they left him behind. Responding to his distress, Hope’s Eidolon, Alexander, is evoked. And again, with the help of his friends is he able to see that he has the strength to carry on. Later on, he also showed his caring side to Vanille, who had been followed about her lying-but he told her that it’s not the lie that matters but what you do after and that if you work hard enough, even lies can become truth.

He also tells her to keep smiling because it makes it happy-though this was his largely unseen humorous side as he began to laugh, saying that they were “even now.” Before running away, continuing to laugh.

Everything that he has experience thus far has made Hope a pretty strong fourteen-year-old and he’s gained a sure confidence in himself. He’s matured a lot from the naïve kid in the Hanging Edge, but he’s still learning and continuing to grow.

FIRST-PERSON SAMPLE | [ audio ]
This isn't Gran Pulse... but could it be--no, this isn't Cocoon either.

I just... [ a pause. ] ...did something happen? Where is everyone?

Excuse me! I'm sorry, but could someone please tell me where I am?

THIRD-PERSON SAMPLE | It’s been awhile since they had been able to take a break. Sure, it had taken a lot of protesting and reasoning, but finally being able to sit down in what seemed like forever was much nicer than he cared to admit-well, at least in front of Lightning anyway. He takes in a breath of air with a smile, having grown fond of the smells of Gran Pulse in their time here-Gran Pulse in general he had grown fond of. Well, the vicious monsters aside; including those monstrous turtle… things they had seen and Snow admittedly said on more than one occasion they should fight. ‘Heroes don’t run from a challenge!’ He had said boldly trying to charge at it before he was, thankfully, tripped by Lightning and told otherwise.

He gives a another smile though, chuckling weakly at the thought as he turned his gaze to the party moving about the camp before his eyes focused in on Snow, well… not so much Snow himself, more his brand. It only lasted a moment before his attention fell to the grass under him, but he couldn’t help the look given to his own brand, at least what wasn’t covered by his wristband. It wasn’t hard to notice the arrows had multiplied or that the eye had opened more. Just how much time did they have left? How much time until they became Cie’th? Would they even be able to reach their goal before it became too late?

Before he could think any further, he was distracted by his name being called, glancing up in time to get a face-full of yellow feathers as the tiny baby chocobo that usually called Sazh’s afro home fluttered it over and landing a top his head with happy little chirps which caused another chuckle to leave Hope as he tried to glance up to where the bird seemed to be perching itself for the time being.

He smiled though, happy for these moments. Happy to have these small, silly moments to remind him that they could do it-that they would do it.
