Okay, everyone should have gotten in their chance to go through the trials if they were interested, so let's start finishing this thing. We're almost done; there will be only be some final wrapping up and exp events after this one! Beginning tomorrow morning, the fortress will no longer be open; if you're already inside, you'll have enough time to finish (or die) before your character's sent home. It will snow overnight (normal snow, not sulphurous), but there will be a lovely patch of Easter lilies growing outside the fortresses, mixed in with Amaranth. The ground feels strangely warm here. You can eat it (it's used for such a purpose in many places), but it will make you mildly sick.
Meanwhile, at the base of the clock tower, where it was blocked off before, a gate has appeared. The gate is made of silver and is studded with the seven jewels that were in the handles of the
keys. Attempts to deface it will cause painful, debilitating muscle cramps. It will remain permanently in its place after the event but can only be opened at specified certain times and only by characters who have earned keys. (There will be future events in which your character can earn one, if you didn't get one during this event).
The following is inscribed over it: 'From here, the only return will be by the falling back on old sins.' The inscription will appear to be written in a character's native language.
In the middle of the gate is a large keyhole, accented with diamonds. Characters who completed the trials will be able to use the key they brought away to unlock the door.
Unlocking the gate will cause a general feeling of warmth and security. Stepping through will lead a character out of Purgatorium and into into Paradise, which should be considered a definite upgrade from Purgatorium - characters may have whatever they like, within reason. The landscape is the character's picture of an ideal place to live; it may be clouds and mysteriously solid rainbows or it may be down town LA. It doesn't matter if they've never seen a place before, either. They will also be the only person they're familiar with there, unless there is a character that was close to them in Purgatorium that also completed the trials and opened the door and has an idea of heaven that's at least vaguely similar. (I'll leave this up to players to decide). Yes, you can set logs here. While in Paradise, characters will be unable to dwell on things that hurt them (physically and mentally); indeed, from having in-depth thoughts at all. Overall, the afterlife is nice, but empty; there's no suffering, certainly, but not much else either. It's comforting, though. Characters will find themselves peacefully sleeping quite often. The more they accept the new placement, the more will be opened to them and will appear in the landscape.
After about six hours (which will feel like three days there, but will be hours in Purgatorium's time) within Paradise, they'll be approached by the character
mastermephisto - otherwise known as Bei (pron. 'By'). As previously, in the depth of the Trials, she wears a pure white cotton dress and a red hooded cloak with a belt of keys:
(Thank you,
obsessiveicons). Though her skin is pale in the icon above, she'll appear to the character viewing them as having the same skin tone, eyes, hair, and complexion as they do. Her demeanour is very calm and homely. She'll inquire of characters whether they want to go back to Purgatorium; she will not answer or accept other questions or answers besides yes or no. (If anyone wants to log this out, hit up Miyu - she'll be very happy to do so). If your character chooses to return to Purgatorium, then they'll be put back into their house. If your character wants to stay in Paradise - well, congrats, you've won the game. Unfortunately, this means you'll have to drop said character, because they no longer have any presence within Purgatorium... or desire to stay there rather than in Paradise.
But don't worry! For this event, you'll be able to return back to Purgatorium; you don't have to lose a character you've spent a long time working on just because their curiosity got the better of them. What this is is the world of Purgatorium essentially putting character's fates in their own hands - allowing them to move forward at will, or to stay in Purgatorium. The Gods will still be sending unredeemed characters back and forth to their home worlds at their whim, but at least now the characters themselves have some say in the matter.
But, of course, the keys do not only serve the purpose of letting a character out when they feel it's time to go. They will also be given the following bonuses for good behaviour on top of all Upper Level privileges:
- Choice housing will be findable only to them. We're not talking state of the art, but they'll also be a touch nicer than the average upper level house. Yes, they can bring non-privileged characters into the house (up to two), but only if they live on the top level.
- Three previously owned belongings returned (Small, nostalgic things - not weapons. Think diaries, photographs, clothing). These items will be on the bed in their old rooms.
- Up to two lost memories may be returned
- Increased stamina
- Easier ability to find food monsters
- Increased ability to find food, period
- Gifts of clothing and food (for themselves only) when necessitated. These will also pop up on their beds.
- No level curfew
- Free access to the bathhouse
It'll also be much more likely that any requests made to the Goddess will be accepted.
Please note that, unlike the Upper Level, killing is not the only way to have these privileges revoked. A character that returns to a path of vice may wake up one day to find they've been clonked down in the bottom level fountain and find that their key has disappeared. They also will have a two week waiting period before they can return to the top level for non-working purposes. They can re-earn keys at a later point, but they'll have a harder time of it and must show extreme dedication to changing and staying changed. If they lose their key the second time it's extremely unlikely that they'll be able to get another, but it is possible.
For the rest,
Food on the hoof is starting to return in small herds on the bottom level. If you're strong enough to hunt, now would be the time. If you're crafty enough to swipe, go for it. If you're the bartering kind, get ready to swap favours. Stock for shops will start to return in half quantity. On the top level, shop stock has returned to its previous quantity.
There's only a little more before we segue into
laboratory's plot events. Let's hang in there and have fun. I hope everyone's Holiday (whichever you celebrate) is going grand! (And that you all did well on Finals, for those that had 'em).
At the end of the event, the FAQ and information will be updated to reflect all of this as well as a text map if nothing more - so if you have any other questions you feel should also be listed, please feel free to leave them here. :) (And any other questions, of course). We'll also be making a list of people with keys and putting it on the upper-level page, so please comment there if your characters earned the key.
