Charles had been rather enjoying the silence they had shared. It was reassuring, comfortable; it showed that they didn't have to make forced conversation to validate their being in each other's company.

It meant that he didn't have to worry about responding to stupid out-of-the-blue remarks like that.

Hand still on the book he'd placed back on the shelf, he turned to face Riku with a look of confused exasperation.

"What?"

Riku shrugged, oblivious to Charles's annoyance.

"I thought you might enjoy having your friends over once in a while," he replied, his honestly happy smile growing wider. He got the impression Charles didn't make friends easily, and wanted to encourage him to do otherwise.

Charles turned back to face the shelf, giving the book a slight shove back against the wall before releasing it.

"I don't have friends," he replied, spitting out the word as if it were the name of a humiliating disease.

"But you spend time with him. You enjoy his company. I think that makes you friends," Riku reasoned, holding his chin in his hand.
