Makubex sat in his room, absently petting Momo, Kohaku resting on the other side with its head in his lap. The teen made a sound of acknowledgment, but didn't move from his spot.
He had to admit, this didn't look well. Watanuki took in a breath, and then he said, "Makubex. I, um...well, you know what I asked. You remember, right?"
Makubex's hand strayed to the ring on his finger. He twisted it anxiously, staring blankly downwards. There was no use beating around the bush with this. Bluntly he asked, "Would you be happier with her?"
Watanuki had known that Makubex would ask that question, and he had tried to think up a good answer to it. However, he had none. He hadn't been able to think of anything to say that would make Makubex feel better. Frankly, this situation just didn't have a simple solution. He would just have to go with the truth. "Well...I don't know, really. I mean, I've never been anything but a friend to her, so I've never known what it would be like."
He sighed. What he had said didn't include everything he wanted to say, so after a moment of silence he continued. "But I'm happy with how things are now. I wouldn't give all of this up just because she showed up. Not now, not ever."
Makubex remained still for a moment, then nodded. "I appreciate your honesty." His hand moved from the ring to his pendant, twirling it thoughtfully. Still avoiding looking at Watanuki, he asked, "...even if she told you she loved you in return?"
Now that question caught Watanuki off-guard. He hadn't thought of her actually returning his feelings, and there was a good reason for it too. But was it his place to tell Makubex about it? It would most likely put his mind at ease, but...no. It wasn't his place to tell Himawari's secrets. "I don't think she would ever do that, so it's not an issue."
Watanuki frowned as well. Makubex didn't think he was THAT dense, did he?
...Okay, so he was. But someone had pointed things out to him already, and now he knew. "Would you be upset if you didn't think that it might become one?"
Watanuki stepped forward and grabbed Makubex's hands. He held onto them firmly: not so much that it hurt, but so that he had a good hold on the other's hands. "It's you and me now. Not Himawari and me, YOU and me. Nothing's going to change that."
Watanuki let go of Makubex's hands, but then he moved to give the other boy a hug. He had never meant to hurt him, and he felt bad for having done so. Now he just wanted to make things better.
Watanuki held onto Makubex for a long time, just glad to be there for the other. However, since Makubex was sitting, it was more than a little difficult to do. He wobbled a little, and he said, "Um, Makubex?"
