His gaze shifted to the clock tower, eerily looming above the darkened Lower City sky, he was punctual, something he had always attempted. He pulled the humble double door and entered the library. Inside he expected to meet Marron, and perhaps his young assistant. "Good afternoon."
Marron had sent Rin home earlier so he was alone in the library when Kurama entered and had been working on repairing the cover of an old book. But he looked up when the other spoke, a polite smile upon his face. "Greetings, I have found the book on the subject inquired about," he said, putting his work aside as he stood.
Kurama regarded him bowing his head slightly. "Thank you." He approached to the counter, next to the gentle glow of the oil lamp. "Perhaps have you read it before, this sort of jobs allow you to absorb vast quantities of knowledge." His emerald gaze fell in Marron, warm, welcoming.
"I have not yet had a chance to read this particular book but I am familiar with the subject at least," Marron explained, though he had read most of the books in the collection. He shifted a couple stacks of books around to pick up a paperbound book with the title "The Rise and Fall of the Umbrella Company'. "I hope this is what you were looking for?"
The kitsune nodded in return, offering him a soft smile. "Exactly... I can imagine there will not be vital information, but it will be helpful. For how long am I allowed to borrow it?"
"Usually not more than for a few days but since I assume there is an important purpose you are requesting this book for, I can extend that. However, I do expect it back in the same condition," Marron said thoughtfully. He had been silently observing the developments with Hojo, Wesker, and Grantz, watching the situation and stepping in where needed.
Kurama bowed his head slightly, acknowledging Marron's words with a mischievous grin "Has my behavior been chaotic enough to give you that thought? Perhaps... I have not been careful when hiding it." his eyes fell to a heavy-lidded stare, back in the librarian's.
Marron smiled slightly. "No, it was a mere warning should you loan the book to others you work with," he explained with a light chuckle. "But I hope it provides some help in your efforts."
He nodded softly and glanced at the book. A black cover with white bold letters. "The Rise and Fall of the Umbrella Company and the octagonal red and white icon below. "Wesker used to work for this company, but reckless greed lead their purposes ... therefore the way it ended."
"I am not surprised," the mage nodded, it fit from what he knew of Wesker. "Such a dangerous man, it would be for the best if he was stopped soon..." he said as he handed Kurama the book.
"Death is not a solution, therefore ...stopping someone is far complicated in a realm like this one." Kurama replied. Slowly he reached for the book, placing a hand in the cover.
"True, but death is not the only alternative," Marron commented with a nod. "If there are any more books on that subject in the piles I have not yet entered in the catalog, I will inform you."
Before he could reply to the mage's words the cracking sound of sparks filled the silence of the library, pricking against his fingers, as they gentle hovered upon the book's cover. He did not retrieve his hand, almost enjoying the seal's taunting magic. Reminded him of the futile attempts of his old foes when they attempted to stop the Youko. Kurama's eyes narrowed softly "A holy seal."
Marron frowned. "It should not have reacted unless you tried to damage the book, I am sure I made no mistake," the mage said, reaching to take the book.
"It is natural the sacred scrolls react to demonic energy." He closed his eyes, smirking softly. "I was not expecting it."
That explains it," Marron said, flipping the book open to the back cover where the white ofuda scroll was stuck on. It did not react as he removed it. "My apologies, I will have to modify the runes so they will not react like that," he said, handing the book back.
"Did not expect youkai to retrieve books?" The redhead teased again as his gaze fell in the scroll, reading the kanji. It was a protection spell which would remain dormant unless the seal's verse was defied or when encountering an opposite energy, in that case, youki.
"I did not expect it to react in such a way. It normally only reacts that way to a certain type of energy," Marron explained, a bit embarrassed.
"Demonic energy, for instance?" Kurama replied knowing it had been exactly what the barrier had repelled. Since his youki had been unsealed it was natural the sacred energy imbuing the scroll reacted offensively. Marron's ashamed words did not remain unnoticed, it was a natural response toward his slightly teasing demeanor.
"I am used to dealing with different types of magic, though similar to demon energy," the mage explained, careful with his words.
"Demonic energy does not have an evil connotation, it is simply a different kind of energy bound to the souls of youkai. My body is the one of a human, but my soul has lived for centuries." Kurama explained calmly, he wouldn't be surprised if in Marron's -world- demons were considered vile creatures.
Marron's eyes widened for the briefest moment before he quickly hide his reaction. So similar... " That is...quite different indeed. Demons are rare creatures from my world, controlled by....a certain group for their own ends so they use a different source of energy."
His emerald gaze remained in Marron as he spoke, certain differences but there were still humans in the ningenkai who summoned demons for the sheer of bloodshed. Sakyô had been one of them. "Therefore, youkai are tools employed for evil. You defend yourself from them."
"Yes...and from those who controlled them," he explained, gaze darkening just slightly at the memory of fighting some of those sorcerers.
"I will keep it in mind not to be mistaken for one of those daemons." He noticed the shift in Marron's mien, at the mention of those, whoever they were, they had troubled the mage in the past. "Let us hope they are not summoned to this realm." The feeling of old enemies. He had three already in addition to the new ones he was collecting.
"There is no chance of that," Marron assured him. "But I would rather those people be here than back home..." he said seriously before shaking his head to get rid of those thoughts, once more composed.
Kurama's emerald gaze remained in him for some more seconds before glancing away, at the window opposite to the counter. "I wish there existed the impossible in Purgatorium, it would bring us safety." Anything could happen. His hands picked the book, no more sacred energy repelling his touch.
Marron nodded in agreement. "Yes....but we do with what we have here for the time being," he observed with a slight smile.
"No other option." Kurama agreed as taking a step back from the counter. "I will return it as soon as I finish the report. I hope it is before two days. Maizuru-san is missing and there have been certain complicated situations. Furthermore ... Shu-san has fallen ill."
"Take your time. As for Shu, if you need any assistance, I am knowledgeable with healing spells, if needed," Marron offered. Even if he did not work for Shu's company, he never hesitated to help when he could.
"I diagnosed him with a cold." He stated calmly. "A particular herbal concoction and rest will do," the kitsune added regarding Marron with a grateful smile. "Thank you, though."
"You're welcome, I hope he recovers quickly," Marron returned that smile to the other with a nod.
