Toshiki had made it a point to help get the site set up (along with lugging the firewood he'd collected along, as well). He'd returned home for awhile at least, in order to get himself cleaned up presentable.

And... ah, to get Kazuki, as well, who insisted he was waiting for Vincent. The blonde had only given him a Look, and it spoke volumes if what he was thinking. Kazuki smiled, though the gesture was thin, and simply told him, 'Go.'

So Toshiki had gone and decided not to worry over the thread-user, if he could help it. For no other reason than... he was supposed to be at this little gathering with someone, right? (That thought still sat awkwardly with him. Not because he minded - not in the least - it was just... out of the norm.)

And thus, to the campsite he went, shuffling his way into view and squinting a bit. Familiar faces around a roaring fire, and it made him smile a little, just a little, as he stepped further out into view, silently wandering up alongside Makubex and plunking a heavy hand down upon the boy's head, ruffling his hair absently.

Makubex frowned briefly at Toshiki before laughing and swatting playfully at his hand.

"So, where's the rest of our motley crew?"

Toshiki's hand fell away, broad shoulders lifting in a shrug. "Fuyuki said he had plans, I think. Kazuki's..." he trailed off, a frown tugging at his features, and absently his gaze averted, staring into the fire as though it were the most interesting thing in the world.

"I think Kazuki wanted to be left alone for while. Maybe he'll stop by later." It was always hard to tell with him; he always had his own agenda, after all. "And I do hope you weren't expecting me to bring Kagami."

Bright eyes flicked back to Makubex briefly, though it wasn't long before the blond was looking to Euphemia instead.

Makubex sighed. "I didn't think Kazuki'd be coming... But Shido did say he'd try to make it." Somehow, Makubex had a feeling he'd be seeing Kagami soon enough, so he didn't mention it. Following Toshiki's gaze, Makubex shrugged and busied himself arranging the table.

Euphemia had been standing there next to MakubeX for a few odd moments, not knowing quite exactly how to greet Toshiki. What would be appropriate? Should she play coy? Should she act like she wasn't... his-date-or-something-like-it? Treat him as she normally did, as she would treat everyone else that would stop by? Or should she do something differentiate it by giving him a hug or something like that? (The idea made her blush a little, much to distress. She could feel the heat of her cheeks against the cool night air). The moment she'd noticed Toshiki was around, she had been torn between glancing at Toshiki and then, fearing she was too obvious, tearing off pieces of her marshmallow and occupying herself with its consumption.

She should really say something, she thought. The idea was reinforced when MakubeX walked off, and suddenly it was just her and Toshiki.

She cleared her throat.

"Um," she said quite eloquently. "It's cold, isn't it?"

Honestly, Toshiki was unused to anyone actually wanting real conversation with him. Most of his companions tended to either be as silent as him, or chatterboxes like Kazuki that could and would carry on an entire conversation by themselves without any input from him.

It was different with Euphemia (ah- wait, Euphie, he was supposed to call her, right?). She generally asked him questions that warranted some sort of response, and for a moment, Toshiki could only study her while searching for... some semblance of an appropriate answer.

"It is," he offered, shoving his hands into the pocket of his coat and glancing down. Ah, the ground sure was interesting, wasn't it? "...You look nice." Interesting. Definitely interesting, yepp.

Euphemia had always been social, though her friends limited, and she found that Toshiki was much different than the people she had dealt with before. He wasn't wanting anything from her--he didn't ask her for anything like power, money, fame--nor did he manipulate conversation into being about himself. He was almost shy, and in a sweet way, it reminded her of Suzaku. But Toshiki was still a much different person, and in that way he was almost a puzzle for her to figure out.

But she wanted to figure him out, very much so. She wanted to know everything (and she still didn't know why).

She found his gaze a bit unnerving, and swallowed before he spoke again. She had the grace to blush. "Thank you," she said sincerely. "I took some time to look nice for you. I didn't want to be... a disappointment." She laughed a bit uneasily, glancing at him out of the corner of her eye. "You always look handsome."

"I think you always look nice," Toshiki replied, brows drawing together in a faint frown. Did Euphemia really think she ever looked bad? She could have shown up in jeans and a t-shirt and Toshiki... well, he'd never have thought she was a disappointment. As far as he was concerned, she was the type of girl that would have looked pretty in anything.

The blonde shuffled his boots against the dirt underfoot, anxious and ever so restless. "You did a nice job getting all this set up." And as more people were arriving, it seemed from their reactions that they, too, were enjoying themselves. It'd been the whole point of the get-together, right? For everyone to have fun and lift a few spirits. ...Even if it was likely to start feeling too crowded for his liking soon, he'd tough it out for as long as he could, for her sake.

If Toshiki really cared to know, an oversized t-shirt was what Euphemia used for sleeping attire. It was practical and comfy.

Euphemia smiled really slowly; inside, she felt like fireworks of happiness, or something equally cliched but just as effective, were bursting inside of her. At least, there was a tug at something within her, but she wasn't quite sure what. Almost like a butterfly's flutter, she thought mildly.

"Do you really think so?" she asked shyly, obviously pleased. "That's the first time anyone's ever said something like that to me."

Euphemia was glad that though the gathering was small, she could consider it a success. People did seem to be enjoying themselves, and that had been her goal, after all--nothing more, nothing less. Having Toshiki here was a pleasant plus; she had been a bit nervous he wouldn't show up, suddenly suffering from a fit of recluse syndrome, but he'd turned up after all (part of her hoped he'd come for her, but the other half hoped he would have come regardless).

"You think?" she asked, looking out a bit. "I didn't really know where to start. I couldn't have done it without you and MakubeX helping, though, without a doubt."

toshiki's the type to bring flowers, hand them to her and go running off all embarrassed. :< emblazoning January 25 2008, 03:21:56 UTC
To her first statement, Toshiki merely ducked his head a little, eyes focused on the ground. Would he have said as much if he didn't mean it? He'd never been one to say things he didn't mean.

The blonde stepped forward, turning a bit so that he was standing alongside her and facing the fire, one shoulder brushing absently against hers given their closer proximity. "...I didn't mind. Gave me something to do, at least. This place isn't exactly bursting with exciting activities." True enough; and Toshiki didn't like being idle. Even physical labor - digging firepits and hauling firewood, were far preferable to sitting at home and doing nothing.

He shifted slightly, cleared his throat and added, "My offer still stands to help you around the shop, if you need it."

Euphie liked watching the way Toshiki's face looked in the fire: lit up by the lurid glow, and she smiled still, turning to face the fire as well. She flexed her fingers to warm them, suddenly nervous by how close he was to her. She hoped she wouldn't do anything awkward or clumsy, as she was wont to do.

"Oh, but," Euphie stole a glance at him, biting her lower lip. "It's my job, you know? Um, I wouldn't feel right getting your help without you getting paid or something... MakubeX works there too."

She paused, and then continued, "Maybe you should ask Alice for a job. Then we can all work together. You wouldn't be without something to do, and then..." she trailed off. Well, I could see you more often.

Toshiki thought about that, giving it due consideration. And... "You know, I don't think I've ever been paid for a job before." Not exactly, anyway. Working for Fuuga had been - well, Kazuki had been his reward for that. Sure, he was helping to better Mugenjou, as well, but that hadn't been his primary motivation.

...Then there was Lucifer, and Toshiki... would rather not reflect on that. Talk about high-risk jobs; how many people actually got themselves killed "working" and lived to tell about it?

And then... working for Makubex under the flag of the Volts. Again, not something that paid, exactly. Toshiki tended to just... find other satisfaction in working than monetary gain. Spending time with Euphemia was his motivation for wanting to help in the store. But, Kazuki had said something about the upper level and needing money to live up there and... he did need money for food, so...

"...We'll see," he murmured, lashes half-lowering over bright eyes. "I do need to find some sort of work, I guess, if I want to keep myself alive and not dying of boredom."

Well, Euphemia had never been paid for a job before either. Before Purgatorium, she had never worked a day in her entire life. After all, most things were provided for, for a princess, and especially one part of the most powerful empire in the entire world. You could say Euphemia had been lucky enough to be born with a golden spoon in her mouth; maybe that was why the shocking state of Area 11 had managed to touch her deeply enough to push for renovations.

If only she had done more before she died. She'd always regret that.

"I've never been paid before, either," Euphemia said frankly. "But it'd be nice to work together, don't you think? We can walk home together too."

That'd be nice too, walking home with Toshiki. She wouldn't mind the company on the trek home. Sure, she might've had company once there, but even if Sephiroth was looking to store his items in Euphemia's little rented house, he probably wouldn't be around. She wasn't even thinking of living in the upper level yet; it just seemed so lonely, to leave her friends behind...

The increasing sound of voices and laughter gave Toshiki pause for a minute, distracted him from his thoughts and made his shoulders tense, ever so slightly. It wasn't so much the number of people that bothered him, but rather the number of people he did not know. How many had heard about this get-together, and how many would have tried to sabotage it in some way? If anyone showed up that attempted to ruin all of Euphemia's hard work, well... to say Toshiki would be displeased was an understatement.

A brief glance around had the blonde catching sight of Kagami, and his eyes darkened significantly. That man had been paying just a little too much attention to Euphie, and he didn't like it. (One could blame Makubex for pointing it out and causing his paranoia to flare up.)

"...I'll ask her," he said, then, eyes returning to his companion's face. "I'll see if she has any openings available. If not... I'll still come and walk you home." The idea of her traipsing around in this city bothered him anyway.

Normally, Euphemia would protest the idea. She was a capable woman, and she felt like everyone didn't believe her when she tried to show that she wasn't something to be coddled, like a child. Was she really a damsel-in-distress, like those princesses in fairy tales? She wasn't sure if he liked that or not: Cornelia had never been in distress, had never seem unable to fight for herself. Euphemia wanted that.

It was just a question of how.

But, for some odd, odd reason, she didn't want to protest and tell Toshiki not to come out of his way. She felt an odd surge of happiness when he said that, like she wanted him to waste his time to come and walk her anyway. It was odd; she pushed the feeling (and the idea accompanying it) to the side.

"If you don't want to work with Alice, you can always work at Shinra, maybe," Euphie suggested a tad shyly, an obvious blush stealing across her cheeks. "And... I'd like you to walk me home, all the same. I'd rather it be you than anyone else."

ShinRa. The company Kazuki worked for, wasn't it? Toshiki didn't think he'd do too well under an umbrella of superiors; he preferred answering to one person and one person only, but... it would stay on his list of things to consider. "I'll figure something out, don't worry about me." He shook his head, lashes lowering halfway over bright eyes.

And the noise... it really was starting to get to him. But, ah, he was in no hurry to leave. Or rather, no hurry to leave her. He straightened a little, head tilting to regard her quietly, thoughtfully, for a long moment.

"...Do you want to go for a walk?" Not far, but... a little ways from the crowd would suit him just fine.
