The lights in his eyes remained burning as he shook her hand gently. The stray thought that he could have easily crushed it in his grip fled across his mind and was quickly ignored. He probably could have sent her headfirst into the crumbling brick if he had wanted. His grip was gentle, careful of his own strength and released her hand when she wished it.

"I am pleased to meet you as well. They tell me you are a Bravo Team leader. At one time, I had a Bravo team under my command. I can appreciate a fellow captain."

Gesturing up towards the ruins of the store, he kept his steps slow for her, aware that his stride was probably two or three of hers. When he reached the floor, he gripped the iron bar grating that looked as if it had once been at the police station or another security type house. Bricks and other weights had been wired to it. Lifting it as if it were nothing, Wesker crouched beside the hole and gazed up at Yachiru seriously.

"Now, my fellow captain, there are a few rules in this for your safety. If I tell you to turn back, I expect you to do so and run for this exit. Do not look back to me. There are things down here that will not hurt me but will tear you apart and eat your still-beating heart with relish. Mind me when I say to watch your head or feet. There are traps. If you need light, tell me. I can see perfectly well in the dark, but you most likely cannot. It is not weakness, merely reminding me. I tend to forget these things. Can you do that, Captain Yachiru?"

There was no teasing in Wesker's manner or voice, the man completely serious as if he were addressing another fighter instead of a child.

He leaped down into the hole, holding up his arms to Yachiru to help her down.

"If you can, come on then."

His strength would have surprised Yachiru had she not had prior warning that he truly was not all human. Instead, watching him, she did her best to hide any surprise over seeing him move the weighted object with ease.

"I got a little flashlight on me so's I'll prolly be fine, but if I do need light I'll let ya know. Thank ya, f'r doin' this." She wanted to add that others didn't trust him, but he knew that.

Instead, she walked over to where he was waiting and allowed herself to be helped down into the hole. Under usual circumstances she would have jumped with no care in the world, but these were not usual circumstances at all. Besides, jumping down past him could be construed as rude and untrusting, and she was neither of those things, especially not after being so brave getting here.

"I will follow yer orders an' turn back 'r run whenever ya say. Also, I'll keep m' hands t' m'self an' be sure t' let ya know if I spot anything suspicious." Truthfully, knowing there were traps had her already keeping her hands in close. She didn't want to get caught in something especially since she knew there were traps, nor did she want to betray the tenuous trust they had going by giving Wesker any indication that she would try to grandstand.

Yachiru appreciated that he wasn't talking down to her, and filed that fact away for future usage.

She was almost amazed that this man, who could probably have killed her twelve times over, was being so serious especially when she knew others who wouldn't.

"Alright, I'm ready t' see yer handiwork. I've heard lots 'bout it."

"I imagine more than a few didn't want you to come or come alone," Wesker said as he lifted Yachiru and set her gently on the pavement in the tunnel. Boosting himself up a little, he grabbed the edge of the grate and drew it back over the opening's mouth, leaving only enough space for someone of Yachiru's size to escape.

"Very good, Captain Yachiru. I think I can trust you on that. Your sword may be sharp and your skill with it great, but as you can see, in here that makes little difference."

Wesker crouched down again to speak to her again although this time it was more for comfort than to be on eye-level with her. The ceiling down here was about five and a half feet up from the floor, forcing anyone over 5'6 to stoop down. Surprisingly, the tunnels were clean for the most part except for some standing water due to the melting snow and the occasional bit of wrapper from Wesker's usual snacks.

"Now, Captain, which way to go? Left or right? Shine your little light over to the left and examine the ceiling closely, then the floor," Wesker said, red eyes flaring. Down here in the real darkness, the light spilled out of them and onto his cheeks, illuminating some of him. The slit-pupils had widened, gathering in that light for him to see by.

If Yachiru did so, she might notice little barbs of wire set in the ceiling of the tunnel as it went left. The tunnel in that way grew smaller as well, narrowing down to four feet where most would have to crawl. There was more standing water in that one, a good inch or so. In that water was broken glass, sharp and hidden by that scum of water if one were taking a casual look. Crawling over that, as most taller people would have to do, would have been brutal even with kneepads and thick gloves.

"I'd imagine right looks better?" Wesker asked, his voice still serious, as if he wanted her opinion instead of simple agreement.

From somewhere far down the twisting network of tunnels Wesker called his own personal transportation system came a high cackling laughter that faded into wracking sobs before dying out. Wesker said nothing to it, his lips thinning in annoyance.

Watching Wesker's every move with as calculating look as she could muster, Yachiru was careful to makes sure that she could get back up to that opening if it was absolutely necessary. She tried to make her assessment of the gap not very apparent but her lack of cunning made her an open book.

Once she was confident in her possible survival Yachiru grinned as she responded to his first comment. "Yeah, two o' my teammates made it clear they thought I was bein' dumb an' I guess if they're right they'll get t' say they told me so."

Glancing down the left hallway as he indicated her bearing and attitude made it clear that as much as she respected Kadaj she had been willing to take a chance, and she didn't know Leon Kennedy well enough for him to truly earn her trust. "Looks like ya got some interestin' traps configured down there..."

Absentmindedly rubbing her knees as she considered the barbed wire, Yachiru was happy that she was only three feet and seven inches tall. While the ground traps would be a possible issue the ceiling traps were mostly a breeze for her. She nearly chuckled as she considered how useful that fact could be if one of her teammates decided to give her guff, depending on if she still had teammates after this.

The only thing Yachiru felt she had to fear at all was Rufus or Zack deciding to punish her for actually agreeing to meet with Wesker but she figured that her honesty over this situation was on record, at least. Feeling a slight headache forming at the thought that she could theoretically be kicked out of the Turks, Yachiru turned her flashlight to gaze down the right corridor.

"Yeah, definitely not as mean lookin' over here t' the right, but ya prolly got some hidden traps, huh?" Wesker was smart like that, she as not afraid to admit this. She was about to elaborate when she heard the noise.

"What was that?" She paused, the flashlight shifting as she looked over at him. "Actually, I don' think I wanna know." It sounded like something bad, and she was trying to avoid trouble. "Carry on, right corridor looks good."

"That was a Licker."

Wesker stared down the tunnel to the right, watching it intently. He stayed that way for a minute, raising a hand to Yachiru for quiet. That glibbering mad laughter came again, sounding as if whatever it was moved further to their left than before.

"Come on, Captain Yachiru."

Wesker didn't offer to hold her hand or the like, letting her walk on her own although he did slow his steps some to not outpace her. They had only taken about ten steps before he made her stop.

"Shine your light down. There's a tripwire there about an inch above the ground, mostly buried in that water puddle. If you shine your light to the top, you'll see what it is hiding back."

Sure enough, attached to the ceiling and flattened as much as possible was two thin whips of metal with half-moon can tops. Their edges looked razor sharp. A thin layer of dusted newspaper or tissue paper had been put over them so that if one wasn't looking closely, it just seemed like a lump in the ceiling.

"I am glad you think they are interesting. Being reduced to these crude means, I've done what I could. Your phone should be right up here."

They walked for a bit, roughly forty paces for Wesker, probably more for her. Thin light came down the grating from above. Wesker pointed to the pile of slush and trash from above.

"That's it, isn't it?"

Sure enough, there was Yachiru's phone.

That insane bubbling laughter came from directly behind her and Wesker. The Licker crouched there, not five feet away. It looked as if the skin had been stripped from a half-human, half-animal. Its tongue lolled down to its feet, the entire thing swaying back and forth like a snake's. The thing's brain had erupted out of its skull and eyesockets, pulsing wetly. Claws paws that looked almost like hands scratched eagerly at the floor, pulling up bits of pipe.

"You're not Jenova-infected, are you, Captain Yachiru?" Wesker asked quietly, eyes flaring to life again in that darkness.

"A what?"

Yachiru was whispering now, her voice barely noticeable over the sounds coming from the creature in the corridor. From Wesker's reaction she could tell it definitely was nothing to laugh about.

"Lead on, Mr. Wesker."

Pausing, Yachiru angled the flashlight where he indicated, letting out a low whistle at the handiwork. Obviously Wesker was quite experienced with these traps.

"If this is what ya could do with 'crude means' then I'd hate t' be where yer from. I'd o' died eight times over by now!"

Yachiru was truly impressed. There were some diabolical minds back at Seireitai, but she had never met anyone like Wesker. It was incredibly eye-opening, especially since she was pretty sure he could succeed in catching and experimenting on her just like he'd threatened in the past.

Continuing to follow behind him, she peered down in the direction he pointed, nodding as she recognized her phone. It looked in tact which definitely took a load off her mind.

"Yeah, that's my phone. An' it's in one piece too! Hopefully it still works."

As she began to make her way towards the phone after not hearing any warnings from Wesker, Yachiru heard a noise that nearly made the blood run cold in her veins. Glancing behind her, she had the presence of mind not to jump.

"Jenova-infected? No, but Fuzzy, er, Logan is, an' I live with 'im. Why, does this thing smell it 'r somethin'?" She straightened up, hand going to the gun she shoved in the waist of her hakama.

"I got my gun an' sword if we need it." She kept her voice soft, but serious.

"Don't move, Yachiru. Don't speak and don't do anything. It is blind, so it can't see you. It does have extraordinary hearing though."

The creature started towards them, pausing a few steps in. It moved like a dog, nails screeching on the metal of the pipe. It snuffled as it breathed in, head lifted. Without warning, the creature's tongue shot out, missing Yachiru's head by a quarter-inch. The tip of its tongue slammed into the pipe, parting the metal in curls as if it had been made of nothing but paper instead of three inch steel.

It danced back, yanking its tongue with a snap of its head. Its brain quivered and pulsed, filling the empty eye sockets. Its nails dug into the pipe, the creature crawling straight up it and resting against the ceiling. It went quiet then, merely crouched there. If one didn't have a flashlight to look up, they could have missed the doglike creature.

"I do believe it's time we were going, Captain Yachiru. Come on. Back the way we came. I didn't realize it was moving around that quick already," Wesker said calmly, quietly. His red gaze stayed on the creature crouched above them.

The Licker stayed silent, its bubbly breathing the only sign it was even there. If a team wandered in and was talking, that single sound might have gone missed until it dropped down on them.

Crouching in the act of grabbing for her phone, Yachiru kept herself as still as possible, her muscles tensed and straining with the effort of her forcing them not to move.

Watching the Licker, she was able to keep from flinching when it's tongue barely missed her head. She refused to consider the damage that could have befallen her if it hadn't missed, and simply waited for Wesker to give her the go ahead. She wasn't leaving without the phone however, knowing just how important it was to keep that safe.

When Wesker finally gave them leave to move again she snatched up the phone as quickly as possible, stuffing it in the pocket sewn into the sleeve of her yukata. She would clean and check it later, before apologizing and explaining her decision to parlay with Wesker.

Moving quickly next to him, Yachiru was slowly growing to trust the odd scientist/military man more and more. The possibilities of her getting hurt down here were numerous, and yet he was keeping true to his word. She wondered if anyone would even believe her when she told them, and knew she'd probably have to arrange a visit with Doctor Lucrecia to prove she was not contaminated in any way.

Speaking softly, her hand slightly muffling the words, Yachiru decided to ask what was on her mind. "Mr. Wesker? Is that Licker a creature from yer world, an' was it yer presence that stopped it from killin' me 'r would it have gone f'r ya too?"

She had a feeling the creature belonged to Wesker but didn't want to say it outright. Still, considering the question he asked regarding the alien Jenova cells perhaps the creature couldn't sense him because of how stealthy he was or something.

"Oh, an' thanks f'r warnin' me back there. I wouldn' o' wanted t' end up like the pole."

Wesker gently tried to move Yachiru ahead of him down the hallway, looking behind him quite often to make sure the Licker hadn't moved. The creature let loose with another bout of that maddening laughter that terminated in a screaming sob before falling silent again.

"That was a dog or wolf that bit me down here. My blood carries the virus in it. I didn't create it, no. I can't control it either. It's like me. The only difference between me and it is that I am relatively in control of myself."

When they had left the creature behind some, Wesker attempted to steer her back towards where they had come in.

"The T-virus is so very dangerous. While Hojo or Jenova can help or control those infected with that, there is no hope for those with the T-virus. You could stab me through the heart, and I would still live. I can't die. That creature can be killed. It's maddened all the time. That's the only two differences between it and me."

Wesker looked behind himself again, as if making sure the creature hadn't moved yet.

"Mind that tripcord, Captain Yachiru. Can you get up and out or do you need a boost? As for the creature, I've seen that before. Many a time. Sometimes... when I'm clear... I wish Chris were here."

The fact that Yachiru could tell Wesker was trying to get her to move in certain directions made Yachiru more pliable, allowing Wesker to maneuver her like one would a robot or doll. She knew he was actually working to help and protect her, and as such didn't struggle.

"So's there's a virus in yer blood that causes regular creature t' become like that? An' ya can' control it? I'm sorry, that sounds real sucky. I mean t' think that someone could end up like that...wow."

Noticing how he kept looking behind him, Yachiru chose not to glance back since Wesker was pushing the pace. Distractions were not allowed.

"Does this T-virus act different in different people 'r is it like the Jenova cells where it seems t' increase base instincts?" Yachiru had been paying attention when around Logan and he was at his worse, and had noticed that the Jenova cells made him seem more primal.

Concentrating as she listened and considered Wesker's words Yachiru did her best to remember the lessons she had received on shunpo, the fast movement technique of the shinigami. She visualized herself moving up towards the opening and jumped, her hands scrabbling for purchase on the ledge as she caught herself and pulled.

"I..just gotta pull m'self over!" She was careful to avoid any traps and distractions as she worked her way up and out of the hole, looking back to see what Wesker was going to do next. "D' ya need a hand 'r anything?"

"The T-virus, yes. Umbrella injected me with it, much as I gather your friends were done with that Jenova. The difference is what I have spreads and kills other people. I have a unique genetic structure that keeps me from mutating further than what I have. We estimated at one time that only one in seventy million people have a structure like I do. Otherwise, it kills them," Wesker whispered to her as they moved, the man ducking his head some to avoid knocking it against the top of the pipe.

"The T-virus kills most people it infects, reanimating the body after death to become what you would call a zombie. Sometimes, it mutates them into becoming a Tyrant, but it's very, very rare. A Tyrant is a mindless, vicious creature of incredible strength. Think your Logan horribly deformed and without a human mind driving that power, only animal instinct."

Wesker watched her leap, the lights in his eyes going out. Stepping on a concrete block, he dragged the grating over over the hole with him inside and her outside. With a loud thud, it fell into place. What little light there was cast a barred shadow over his face, as if he were imprisoned down there.

"I need to drive it deeper into the sewers and away from any gratings or holes it might escape. I am sorry I couldn't show you more, Captain, but that should be enough for you all to be aware."

The barest suggestion of a smile came and went as Wesker raising a hand to her in a half-arsed salute and headed back into the darkness.
