There had been noise and then that gulf of silence, just as it had been with Shu before. Schuldig had been in the process of having one of his long discussions with Tot on why it was bad to yark in his shoes when the kitten felt the urge when he went utterly still. He listened for a voice that was no longer there, a mind he lurked at the edges of more often than not. Animation left the telepath's face, the man going as still and expressionless as a toy with its batteries suddenly pulled ( ... )

In the moments after Cissnei's death, River's world became a blur... or, rather, far more of a blur than normal; she screamed, at least. She was certain of that. She had... struck out at Logan, though the specifics remained a mystery. She drove him off... somehow. And then... everything snapped back into focus. She was kneeling over Cissnei... and she was crying. For all that she'd said death was meaningless here, that it was cheap... this hurt. He lowered his head to touch lightly against Cissnei's own, the well of grief horrible for a man who didn't experience such things. His thumbs ran slowly from beneath her eyes, down her cheek bones, and down to her lips as he took her corpse from Cloud. The telepath nodded to whatever Cloud said to him, drawing her into his arms and holding her as gently as one would a child. She felt so damned small in his grasp ( ... )

River wanted to ask him what he was going to do, where they were going to go - since her newfound coherence seemed to dampen her powers - but thought better of it. He was ignoring her purposefully... and that meant he needed to. He'd said, before, that meeting her could destroy him; perhaps this was the only way to prevent that. It hurt, of course... but, it didn't matter. She couldn't push it away, but she could fail to care about it; he was helping niang. That's all that mattered ( ... )
