Gan Ning finally felt like he had some idea as to what was going on here. He didn't fully understand what the situation was but he was waiting for an explanation from these so called 'Gods'.

He finally managed to find some sort of shelter to stay in just outside the forest, it was a little damaged from the explosion but he'd manage to salvage it. He'd decided earlier on to find something to hunt, he didn't have his sword but he had some broken shards on glass to throw at on coming prey.

After a brisk walk further into the forest, the tattooed man spotted a girl sitting beneath a tree. He turned to face her properly, there seemed to be something quite off about the situation. He tilted his head to get a better view. She appeared to have tied her legs together and had what appeared to be a peice of glass, much like what he was carrying in her hands.

Naa...this ain't right... he thought to himself and began to walk towards her. "Hey, are ya alright there?" he asked as he approached her.

Matoi was surprised by the sudden voice, and she jumped slightly, the glass shard in her hand cutting the inside of her palm shallowly. Thin rivulets of blood ran down from her hand to her wrist, but she paid them no mind. Instead, she turned to properly face the oncoming man and blinked.

"Yes," she replied. "I'm alright."

Gan Ning stopped walking when he was close enough to see the girls face. The bells around his waist stopped jingling too. He didn't believe for one moment that she was alright and his gut instinct was right when he saw blood trickling down her wrist.

She's not even bothered that she's hurtin' 'erself? This kinda looks like she's gonna...oh shit! he thought to himself, as the jingling of the bells started again as he moved. He was now squatting beside the girl with a slightly corncered look in his eyes. With his tattooed arm, he touched the girls cut arm and held it to stop he lifting it. He didn't hold it with any force, the last thing he wanted was for the girl to do something stupid.

"Oi, what ever's wrong, this is not the way to deal with it" he said to her in his gruff voice

His actions startled her somewhat, and Matoi's expression reflected her confusion. The sound of the bells chiming caught her attention, but she quickly recovered herself, remembering what she had set out here to do.

"This... this is the only way," she said in a quiet voice, eyes turned to the ground. "My life no longer has meaning to it. Please let go."

Matoi couldn't bring herself to look at him--for some reason, she felt ashamed that she was trying to commit suicide in front of a complete stranger.

Sighing Gan Ning shook his head. There was absolutly no way in hell he was letting this girl go through with killing herself, it wasn't right. True, he didn't know her reasons but he couldn't let her do this. This girl couldn't be much older than the Qiao sisters, maybe that's why he felt he had to stop her...

"Sorry, Kid but I can't let ya do this" He replied "Everyone's life has a meanin', even when things are really shit"

He didn't removed his hand from her arm and his eyes remained focused on her movements. He truly hoped he could get through to her.

"How about ya throw down that glass and I take that rope off of yer legs, aye?" he asked in a calm voice.

"I... even if I died, no one would care," Matoi explained, still staring at the ground, the glass shard still firm in her hand. "That's why... the only way I can prove the worth of my life is through dying."

Hesitantly, she lifted her eyes to look at the man. "Why are you trying to stop me?"

"Yer probably wrong there" Gan Ning replied "There's always gonna be someone out there who cares, even in this stange place"

The girl had finally looked at him, this was some sort of break through or at least the pirate hoped so. She'd asked him why he was stopping her, that was fair enough. He was a man of war, why would he be bothered about a young girl like her? It probably was because of the sisters.

"It'd be a shame fer such a young life to go unfulfilled" he explained with a slight smile "Who knows what ya could make of yerself, even in this place?"

Matoi supposed she could be partially wrong. Kafuka was there, and she must have cared at least somewhat. But... sensei. Sensei, on the other hand, had stopped loving her. What meaning had she then? She wanted to see him, right then and there, wanted to know what he was doing, but the rope on her legs and the glass in her hand reminded her...

"Unfulfilled? Like, without living life to its fullest? I... I don't want to live a full life, if I have to live it alone!" Matoi was close to sobbing--she had started crying, but at least the sob had made her drop the glass shard. It clattered to the ground, bloodied, but harmless.

The pirates eyes widened as he saw the girl crying. He hated it when girls cried, it reminded him of his past and more importantly of the girls he was friends with back home. He closed his eyes for a moment and then opened them, she dropped the glass at last but Gan Ning wanted to stop the crying.

"It's hard bein' alone, Kid but look even someone who you don't know is worried about ya!" he said "If there's anything I can do to make things easier then I'll try my best ta help"

That's right--Matoi realized. He was worrying for her. This stranger she'd never met or even seen before was worried about her. Her tears stopped then, and she looked into his eyes, searching for whether or not he was telling the truth.

"You're... worried? About me? ...you don't want me to die?" she asked.

...could it be?

He was being truthful, he didn't want the girl before him to go through with this. She'd stopped crying at least and Gan Ning nodded with a genuine smile.

"Yes I am worried about ya and damn straight I don't want ya ta die" he replied.

It was the complete opposite of sensei, but Matoi supposed there was more than one form of true love. To this man, true love would be to live. To live for him. She sniffled a little bit and wiped at her eyes with her kimono sleeve with a small smile.

"Th-thank you," she said quietly.

She was smiling now and Gan Ning felt a wave of relief. He didn't know what was going on in the girls head but all he cared about right now was that she wasn't going to go through with killing herself.

"Yer welcome" He replied "Don't think I told ya my name, it's Gan Ning"

He looked at the rope still around her legs and then back at her. "How about I cut you free now and take you home?" he asked

Matoi nodded happily, looking as though a great burden had been lifted from her shoulders. 'Take her home' meant... they would be together! She would know where he lived! She could follow him there!

"Sure!" she exclaimed. "Oh, and... my name is Tsunetsuki Matoi." She fidgeted a little bit, a faint blush coloring her checks. "You could call me Matoi though."

She definatly seemed a lot better, Gan Ning felt relieved that he'd been able to stop this. He noted the slight blush but didn't say anything about it "Nice to meetcha" he said "I'll cut ya free now, ya ready?"

He picked up the blade of glass and cut her legs free. He looked back up at her. "There y'go" he asked "Right, are ya gonna be able to walk, Matoi?"

"Yes, I will," Matoi answered. She stood up and brushed her kimono off, trying to get the leaves and dirt off. She lid her geta back onto her feet and nodded. "I'm ready."
