We were predicted to get 10-15" snowfall during this Snowpocalypse 2011. Jake's school was canceled last night around 7:30. The meterologists were predicting horrible conditions and warning everyone to stay off the roads as much as possible to allow road crews to work and clear everything and to avoid the hazardous conditions.
When we woke up this morning, we have maybe 6". That's it? After all this hype and drama and people being 'OMG-the-end-of-the-world-I-need-to-stock-up-on-food-NOW'.... I have to say I'm a bit disappointed. I was looking forward to opening my front door to a wall of snow and seeing how Ben would react to being tossed into a gigantic snowdrift. The weather people are trying to save face and telling us we'll get another 1-3" throughout today and that the roads are slick with sleet and freezing rain from overnight... but I don't know. It's not as bad as everyone anticipated, which is a good problem to have.
Don't get me wrong, I'm sitting here in my robe typing at home at a time when I would usually be walking into lab. I got an extra hour's sleep and will get to spend the morning with my boys, which is always a blessing. Still, I feel since the storm wasn't so bad that I should make an effort to head in. I definitely have things that I could do and a committee meeting that is fast approaching.
Plus, there's this email that was sent out just a few minutes ago:
The University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor is open for classes and is maintaining reduced operations today. The Flint and Dearborn campuses have canceled classes for today. (Even though Eastern, MSU, Washtenaw Comm College, and all other colleges in the area are closed. UM likes to be different)
Campus leaders would like to remind the community that the universitys severe-weather policy encourages all employees to make a reasonable effort to report to work as scheduled, using good judgment about the risk of travel.
If operations are being maintained in a staff member's department, he or she should report to work or notify his or her supervisor if reasonable attempts to do so fail. Students should follow the normal procedure with their faculty member if they are unable to attend class.
Edited at 12 noon to add: It's been snowing steadily since I woke up this morning and the wind has continued blowing. I guess we're expected to have snow all day long. There has been no sign of the truck that usually plows our cul-de-sac nor have there been any plows on the main road just outside. I have seen a snowmobile go on that road, along with a couple SUVs. For a while I was debating going in this afternoon, but since the snow has not stopped (and in fact, picked up in intensity) I'm not going to attempt it. Not worth the risk, in my opinion. Also, a girl I work with was on an Ann Arbor city bus that got into an accident this morning. She's fine, luckily, but did spill coffee all over her coat. Ann Arbor roads are notoriously treacherous during and after snow storms, so I'm going to give the local government PLENTY OF TIME to clear up.
I hope everyone is staying safe and warm today!
snow,
weather,
school,
snow day!
