✘ THE CHARACTER
FULL NAME: Atton “Jaq” Rand (Jaq may be his real first name, as Atton is probably an alias)
AGE: 29
GENDER: Male
SPECIES: Human
APPEARANCE: Atton is a good-looking man in his late twenties (or early thirties). He’s of average height, around 1.8 meters tall, and carries himself well. He has dark brown hair and eyes and typically goes clean-shaven. His hair is usually parted on the left and kept in a slightly messy, if practical, style. He appears to be in excellent physical condition and most likely has something of a soldier in his stride.
PERSONALITY: On the surface, Atton appears to be your typical smuggler or gambler or even fighter jock. He’s a bit arrogant, witty, quick with comebacks, good with words, and amusingly cynical at times. He also comes off as something of a ladies-man and tends to hit on attractive women when he finds them, sometimes with success, other times not. He tends to deal with most situations and people with a mixture of apathy and sarcasm. He comes off as laid-back and care-free, refusing to take up responsibility for much of anything, if he can help it. However, this attitude masks an inner turmoil and bitterness.
Atton was a soldier with Republic during the Mandalorian Wars and he developed a strong sense of bitterness and hatred towards the Jedi that refused to aid them and sat in their enclaces, waiting for the right moment. However, Revan and the Jedi who followed him into battle and led the Republic to victory against the Mandalorians earned his respect and his loyalty. His bitterness towards most Jedi runs with him to this day. As the Jedi Civil War began, he defected to join Revan’s new Sith. He became a Jedi hunter and assassin for them, hunting, killing, and breaking Jedi so they would turn to the Dark Side. He was good at it and he enjoyed it.
One Jedi, a woman, told him he was Force sensitive and that he would be hauled off to be broken and turned into a Dark Jedi, just as others had. Atton dismissed this and tortured the Jedi almost to death. However, right before she broke, before she died, she entered Atton’s mind and showed him the Force inside of him. Showed him what he was doing to her, to all of the Jedi he had tortured and killed. This very nearly broke Atton. Horrified at himself and terrified of being discovered, he killed the Jedi. He claimed it was because he loved her, saying that when he began he would've loved to kill her, but in the end killed her because he "loved her".
As a result of these perceived or real betrayals in his life, Atton has trouble trusting others. However, he likes it when he is trusted, which is something of a paradox. As an extension of his distrust and self-imposed isolation, he hates being used as someone else’s pawn. He also seems to have an irrational dislike of droids.
HISTORY:
Atton was a soldier with Republic during the Mandalorian Wars, roughly 4,000 years before the Galactic Civil War and the Battle of Yavin (Star Wars: Episode IV). During the war, many of the Jedi Knights first advised caution and developed a "wait-and-see" attitude, even as the Mandalorians burned their way acrosss tha galaxy. He developed a strong sense of bitterness and hatred towards those Jedi that refused to aid the Republic military. However, one Jedi, Revan led a group of Jedi into the war to aid the Republic. He near single-handedly turned the war around and he and the Jedi who followed him earned the respect and loyalty of Atton and other Republic soldiers. The Mandalorian Wars finally drew to a close, but the bloodletting was not yet over.
Revan turned to the Dark Side of the Force, announcing himself as Darth Revan, Lord of the Sith. Many of the troops who had served under Revan in the Mandalorian Wars, including Atton, defected to Revan's side, joining him as Revan turned on the Republic and began fighting the remains of the Republic. This would become known as the Jedi Civil War. As this new war began, Atton discovered his innate talents for hiding himself from Jedi. With some training, he became a Jedi hunter and assassin for the Sith, hunting, killing, and breaking Jedi so they would turn to the Dark Side. He was good at it and for a time, he enjoyed it. Took pleasure in it. His bitterness towards the Jedi had been twisted into hatred.
Finally, he captured one Jedi, a woman, who told him he was Force sensitive and that eventually the Sith would turn on him and break him, in order to turn him into a Dark Jedi. Although there had been rumors, Atton dismissed her and instead tortured the Jedi almost to death. Before she broke, before she died, she entered Atton’s mind and showed him the Force inside of him. Showed him what he was doing to her, to all of the Jedi he had tortured and killed. This very nearly broke Atton. Horrified at himself and terrified of being discovered by the Sith, he killed the Jedi. He claimed it was because he loved her, saying that when he began he would've loved to kill her, but in the end killed her because "I loved her".
That done, he deserted and fled from the Sith and the war. He hid himself on the Smuggler's Moon, Nar Shadda, where he found work as a smuggler and cargo hauler. He spent several years there, hiding, as the Jedi Civil War slowly ground on and the galaxy died. On a hauling trip to the Peragus mining facility, he was arrested by the local authorities and placed into a force cage. This would actually save his life, as the facility was later flooded with gas. He was freed by the Jedi Exile and joined her on her mission to restore Order to the galaxy (however much he protested that he wasn't really in it for that). Lately, they have landed in the Smuggler's Moon, his old stomping grounds. It is there that things take a decidedly strange turn for him...

UNIQUE ABILITIES:
Atton has several unique abilities:
Pistols and Hand-to-Hand - Atton is extremely skilled in the use of blaster pistols in combat, being a crack shot, and also has extensive training in Echani hand-to-hand combat techniques.
Slicing - Atton is also a gifted slicer (aka a hacker) and often finds his way through loopholes or other security measures in various computer systems where others might fail. His ability to crack through a firewall should not be underestimated
Mental Defenses - Atton truly comes into his own when his mental defenses are examined. He has developed and self-taught himself a variety of techniques to prevent Jedi from detecting his thoughts and intentions, and these were crucial to his success during his service as an assassin. He became so good that Jedi or Sith from his own army wouldn't even know he was present. He maintains these skills and uses them to hide his true identity from Jedi, for obvious reasons.
These techniques including playing Pazaak in his head, broadcasting a single, strong emotion as his surface thoughts in order to fool Jedi, and counting sounds or other such minutia.
Resilience - Atton is also able to recover from terrible injuries, standing up when others would normally be incapacitated by blaster fire or other combat injuries. Whether this is through sheer willpower, physical toughness or a combination of the two is unknown.
Force Sensitive - He is also Force sensitive, although he tries to hid this fact. He is not trained in its use, although it may give him his "hunches" or bad feelings.
FIRST-PERSON SAMPLE:
Hey, this thing on? Check, check. No, no, try the green wire, you stupid bucket of bolts! Oh, hey this light’s blinking. Uh, hello? Is anyone out there? This is Atton Rand, smuggler and master Pazaak player. I… uh… seem to be stranded on some sort of planet. I think it’s a planet anyway. It could be a really big space station. That’s not the point. Anyway, I’m stranded here with just a stupid astro-droid to keep my company and I would really, really appreciate it if… uh… someone could swing by and rescue me? You can leave the droid here for all I care.
I’m trying to find someone anyway. So, listen, just rescue me and I’ll make it worth your while. Because, really, who does anything out of the goodness of their hearts anymore? Honestly. Anyway, just trace this signal back to its source and you should be able to find me. And if not, I’ve been rescued already or I’m dead, so either way I’m not your problem anymore! Alright, that’s it. You can turn it off, you stupid astro-droi-
THIRD-PERSON SAMPLE:
Ah, Nar Shadda. A wretched hive of teeming desperation and life. So many people, so easy to get lost in. That’s the part that Atton loved, he admitted to himself. The fact that here, he was just another face in the crowd and it should be (would be) nearly impossible for anyone to find him, even if they were looking. There were millions of bolt-holes, little hideaways in the walls, disreputable bars, places he could simply become invisible. It was what he’d been trying to do ever since the end of the Jedi Civil War. He didn’t want to think about his past or what he’d done or what she’d shown him about himself. About the Force. He frowned, slipping his hands into his pockets. Things were different now, though.
For one thing, she had arrived. He cast a glance at the Jedi Exile, who was striding purposefully ahead of him, her head held high. A rarity among the beaten-down refugees and scum who inhabited this place. Ever since he’d met her at Peragus, ever since Atton had started following her, things just seemed to click into place. It felt right. It was good to have someone who trusted him around, even if Kreia… had gone into his head. Right past his vaunted defenses, which he’d worked so hard to build, and ripped his memories out of him. Taken the information she wanted. And now he was being blackmailed. Blackmailed by an old woman. Great job, Atton. A Jedi, but still an old woman. A very scary old woman.
He scowled to himself and tried not to think about it, tried to project a feeling of nonchalance and cockiness, like he always did. The Exile wasn’t going to just find out about him anytime soon. Not if he could help it. She didn’t need to know about his past and she didn’t need to know what he’d done. She’d probably kill him for it anyway. Still, he would follow her, he would help her, because for the first time in a long time something about his life felt right. Something felt good. He managed a smile, glanced up and over to toss out a snarky comment about how she seemed to fit in with the rest of the riff-raff. She’d probably give him that annoyed glare, an-
His stride broke and he stumbled as he found himself on a planet that was not Nar Shadda. He was in the middle of a lush forest. He blinked.
“Whoa, whoa. This has to be… a vision. Or a hallucination or something,” he muttered and knelt, running his hand over the ground. There should be metal or stone under his hands. Instead he found loose earth, plants.
“A very, very good hallucination? Please?”
He stood again, stared in horror at his surroundings. No power in the galaxy could do this. Could it?
