Summary: After the birth of Claire’s child, Aaron. A small, one-shot post; Kate’s point of view as she examines her feelings for Jack.
Assumptions: Claire named her baby much earlier in the show (not in the season 1 finale). Hence the baby is named (Aaron) before Michael, Walt, Jin and Sawyer leave the island.

Kate Austen couldn’t quite figure out the tall, tattooed, spinal surgeon with an ultra soft center. There was more to Jack Sheppard than met the eye and everyday she saw a different side of him.
Today was no exception.
Five minutes ago Claire rushed into the clinic complaining about her infant, Aaron, and looking incredibly upset. She had rattled off something about Aaron refusing milk and then mumbled something Kate had not understood. Worried, she called Jack who was out having a chat with Michael. And Jack responded instantly.
Like you always do…you’re never too busy, are you Jack?
She watched in awe as Jack gently lifted baby Aaron out of Claire’s arms, placed him on the makeshift bed and checked his vitals. The baby cooed and reached out for Jack’s fingers; Jack grinned and whispered something back to the baby. He looked up and smiled gently.
“You have a perfectly healthy baby,” he told Claire.
Claire’s look of concern vanished and was replaced with a beaming smile and shining eyes. “Oh, thanks so much Jack. I was so nervous when he didn’t respond to feeding.”
“It takes time, Claire…just be patient…and don’t worry.”
“I was so embarrassed about the feeding problem…I’m sorry to have troubled you.” She turned a sweet shade of pink.
“Not at all…there’s no such thing as an embarrassing question, Claire. Ask me anytime, okay?”
Claire nodded and picked Aaron up. Her grateful smile indicated her thanks far more than words could.
You’re something else Jack Sheppard. You really are. One minute you’re trekking through the jungle, armed with weapons, trying to find a member of our group and the next you’re picking up a tiny helpless creature like this little baby.
“Thanks again, Jack.” Claire turned once more before she left the clinic.
Jack waved and nodded.
And you certainly attract women like bears to a honey pot. I cannot say I blame Claire for being a bit in awe of you. I’m kinda mesmerized myself.
“Wow,” Kate smiled. “Keep this up and I’ll have to go ahead with my plan for a Jack Sheppard fan club.”
Jack’s eyebrows went up. “Really? And what position do you plan to hold?”
“Founder, president, number one fan…although I think Claire and I might have to tussle for the latter.”
Jack coughed. The blush on his cheeks was not as visible under his day’s growth of stubble, but Kate noticed it immediately and that made him look all the more embarrassed.
“Is that the flustered look?” She teased.
“Wow…direct.” He chuckled nervously.
“Yeah its one of my better habits.” She smiled and thoroughly enjoyed the reaction she was getting from Jack. His normally cool, friendly personality was beginning to crack and she could see she that was making him nervous.
“Don’t you think there will be a conflict of interest if you hold that many posts?” Jack raised an eyebrow. “We wouldn’t want anyone accusing you of monopolizing-”
“-just president then,” Kate shrugged. “That way I’m the one who maintains contact with the object of our…um…affections.” She stepped towards him; then wondered if her move had been far too bold.
“Clever.” He replied taking a step closer to her.
Argh, my heart. Stop that silly hammering. Yes, he actually moved towards me. Wait, he’s still moving towards me…
“Perhaps Claire could try out for number one fan…provided she just admires from afar.” Kate’s could feel a series of strange flip-flops in her stomach.
“Perhaps…but I don’t think you need to worry about her.”
“Really?” Kate was sure her voice sounded like a croak. Jack was right in front of her, not even a foot away.
“Hmm. She’s a sweet thing…but…” he said the next bit softly. “She isn’t really my type.”
“And that would be?” Kate felt her cheeks grow warm.
“Well, for one thing I prefer troublemakers. A rap sheet is a bonus.”
Kate couldn’t help but chuckle. Ordinarily, she’d have flinched at being called a troublemaker…with a rap sheet.
But not when you say it Jack. When you say it my knees feel like that jello they make in hospitals and school canteens; all wiggly and rubbery and ready to give way.
“Sun could be secretary.” Jack suggested.
“Yeah, she’s married…” Kate agreed noticing again that Jack had moved even closer to her. “Plus she’s faithful to her husband, so I need not worry…” Kate’s voice trailed off as Jack was now just inches away.
He shrugged. “And she’s not my type either.”
“True, no rap sheet.” Kate smiled, but her nerves were in knots.
Kate, get a grip…you’re melting into a puddle!
“Yeah,” Jack closed the distance between them somewhat, bringing them nose to nose.
Kate, get a grip…
“One suggestion though,” Jack murmured his breath warm on her cheeks.
“Hmm?” Kate wasn’t sure if she was thinking straight but she could have sworn that the ground beneath her was shifting.
Whoa there, girl.
“Whatever you do…don’t make Sawyer the treasurer. We might have funding problems.”
Kate barely managed a giggle as Jack’s lips covered hers and stopped the next thing she was going to say. He was warm, soft and a teensy weensy bit ticklish thanks to the stubble on his cheeks, but it didn’t really matter when he slipped his arms around her waist and drew her into his kiss.
It was strange and exciting and more of an adrenaline rush than half the great escapes she had planned in her life. If a volcano had erupted next to the cave she really wouldn’t have noticed. She was too busy melting into a puddle of mush.
And it was all because Jack Sheppard was kissing her
And for once…just once…Kate Austen just surrendered to the moment…
And Jack’s arms…
