About two months ago (maybe two and a half; time flies, you know) I bought some little grow kits: a strawberry for home and a strawberry and a lavender for my office at work. I planted the seeds and I’ve kept them watered religiously. Several weeks ago, I started getting lavender shoots, and now I have three that have grown quite a bit. The strawberries, however, never sprouted. It turns out that strawberries are hard to start from seeds, and I probably should have at least soaked them before I planted them.
Anyway, a week or two ago I had a thought. What if I planted a whole strawberry in the pot? Maybe the decomposition of the fruit would provide a fertilizer that would help get the seeds started. I eat strawberries almost every day for lunch anyway, so one day while I was making my lunch I cut a few pieces off the tops I was going to throw away and planted them in the pot (finding no strawberry sprouts already in there, by the way, which justified my belief that the seeds I had already planted just weren’t going to grow).
And whadd’ya know, it worked. I glanced up today while making my lunch to see how my pot of dirt was doing, and there was one very small sprout, which I must assume is a strawberry. Woo hoo!
I am very proud of myself for my flash of inspiration. I will be planting some strawberry tops in my office pot as soon as I have the chance.
There is now officially the vague possibility that at some point I will have a home grown strawberry or two to eat (they’re the best kind, you know).
