Let the Children Play!

In response to the devastation of personal property and displacement of thousands of families in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, southwestern Wisconsin artist Michelle Workowski and Waushara County musician/edu-tainer Bill Kehl are collaborating to create “Let the Children Play!”, an effort to bring smiles, joy and support with a personal touch to children and their families thoughout the hurricane-affected south. According to both Workowski & Kehl, their mission is to “share heart and a helping hand wherever small hands are reaching”.

Longtime friends who share a passion and appreciation for the creative potential and energy of children, Workowski & Kehl are planning to deliver donated art supplies, books, puppets, musical instruments and other selected items. They are also planning to blend their unique individual talents to interactively share with children residing in temporary shelters in the Gulf Coast region.

Bill Kehl, founder of Planetary Productions, Ltd., is well-known throughout the state for his interactive and educational musical enrichment programs with primitive instruments and drums. This year he is celebrating 25 years of making music in Wisconsin, going back to 1980 when he began performing with the quartet Northern Light. Michelle Workowski, with her partner and husband Ken, are owners, designers and founders of The Nature of Things, creating refined rustic art and furniture for the home. Workowski describes how she became inspired to provide support for the children. "My first thought after hearing about the hurricane was of the children. My next was, how could I help ease their sadness, if only for a moment? I immediately came up with the idea of dressing up as a clown and taking some smiles and gifts... to help them remember who they truly are...CHILDREN!

As of this time, "Let the Children Play!" hopes to depart from Wisconsin on October 10th and visit children in as many shelters as possible, sharing music, stories and smiles as they distribute selected donated items to children and their families.
