I proclaim that Tangled is the cutest movie of the year, nay, of recent memory. It's also fun and pretty...! I am so glad they got Alan Menkin doing the music for this one, I think it was just what they needed to get the feeling back into the princess movie genre. That's definitely what was missing from The Princess and The Frog. It was a good movie but the musical numbers were just missing something...something that was apparently Alan Menkin.
I don't think the songs in Tangled are going to be as iconic as the songs in the 90s movies, but they certainly add to the atmosphere and magic of the movie. They are definitely great songs though, I am just not sure that in 20 years people will still remember the lyrics etc. like they do with movies like The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Beauty and The Beast etc.
Also are Flynn/Eugene and Rapunzel not the cutest little couple?
Heck, I am just a fan of Flynn on his own ifyaknowwhatimean ;). I can also appreciate a Disney guy with facial hair! And Zachary Levi as his voice!
But I think Rapunzel herself is a strong female character, she is the one generally saving Flynn after all! Not to mention she is quite good at defending herself.
I also enjoy the changes this movie made to the original story. For instance that Rapunzel wasn't saved by a prince, but she did most of the work really and that they made Flynn a theif. I think I like him more because he isn't Mr. Perfect like other princes (my other favorite Disney male protagonist is Aladdin after all...). Also I appreciate that he doesn't get blinded in a nasty way, even though he did get stabbed and die...so they kept the healing aspect and that something bad happened to him, but thorns + eyes = yikes!! And in general I am glad that Disney didn't completely wimpify the story and added that he got stabbed and died although as Matt noted they didn't show any gaping wounds still, just the blood. I think that was quite clever on Disney's part to keep out the gore but still signify that it was a really really bad injury!
My only real issue is that sometimes it doesn't really seem like she had 70 feet of hair...especially after she left the tower and more so when she had it braided.
I know it's asking for trouble but I would really like to see a sequel about them getting used to palace life, I am really curious about that considering Rapunzel never met her parents/doesn't know anything about the outside world and Flynn was recently nearly hanged at (most likely) the King & Queen's request. I know it would probably be a forgettable straight-to-DVD/Blu-Ray affair but that's ok! I just want MORE dammit. MORE MORE MORE! I think i am learning that word from Noah ;).
