Rant open for discussion...
It feels good to rant. Here's a few things about Torchwood fandom (mostly fanfiction) that have been bugging me for a while. Please, share your own thoughts!
So to start with, I'm so glad that finally some of the mods made a ban against posting huge banners and ridiculous fonts on fics. It's so annoying having to scroll through them cause people post it to about 12 different communities :( Why not just put the banner on your lj post and then link to there? Sometimes you just know when you're NOT going to like a fic, just from the banner or the badly photoshopped icon.
Secondly, I just can't bring myself to read fics where people write a bloody essay in their summary/authors note. I understand that sometimes it might be necessary, but I wish people would stick all that on the actual post to their lj so people not reading that story won't have to spend hours scrolling through their friends page to get passed it.
When did use of the word 'Yan' come back BTW? It went away for a while and now suddenly it's popping up all over the place again. I hate it when I'm reading a really good story and suddenly it's just THERE in my face. IT'S YAN-TOE, FFS. GET IT RIGHT. I also hate Owen calling Ianto 'teaboy' all the time. Okay, it's fine once or twice in a story but when Owen is referring to him as teaboy in every other friggin' sentence. WHEN did that ever happen in the show?! OH wait, it DIDN'T.
I can't stand riddles in fic. Not actual riddles, just great long paragraphs describing every single detail in a language completely unknown to me. You can tell me I'm not 'mature' enough to understand that level of writing, but I just get bored y'know? I understand a writer needs to set the scene, but after about ten paragraphs I'm thinking... so is anyone gonna do something or are you just gonna describe the colour of Ianto's tie for another three hours?
Saying that, I can't stand fics where each chapter is under 1000 words long. That's not a chapter, ffs. As soon as I'm getting into it it's finished! It doesn't leave me wanting more, it just pisses me off. Generally stopped reading multipart fics to be honest. There are a couple I follow, though I used to be far more dedicated. It's hard to search through the endless MPREG and happy family fics to find something worth while.
I swear I wanted to rant about more. I'm generally getting annoyed with all the arguments starting over someone simply expressing their opinion. It's like people can't wait to stir up trouble and jump on every given oppourtunity. The new series is in a week, ffs! Radio plays in a couple days. What's not to love? Apart from everything in this post, of course.
Forgive me for not making a huge amount of sense this week. I'm too excited for Torchwood but tired from Glastonbury. It's an interesting combination..
Also, sorry if I offend anyone. But hey, it's my journal. I'll rant all I like.
I think I'm over the shitty rumours of shittyness btw. Of course, I still believe we're going to get a huge cliffhanger at the end of ep 4 and instead of being terrified, I'm reeeally excited for it :D I actually think Ianto's going to be okay.
