Okay, so last night wasn't as bad as I thought. Really wasn't worth $15, as it was essentially just a residency sort of set-up, but just with tabla and strings. The way Rossco was talking, I expected it to be massive. But no. Just Nathan and Yogi and Jules and Jess. 'Highlights' of the night were either the faux-'sex song' ('A faux-hemian. Someone who lives in the western suburbs.'), Anthony getting shut down in the quickest Gaunt comeback I think I've ever heard, or Sharpy spilling his beer all over my foot and being exceptionally apologetic. Oh, or the overpowering smell of cheap incense being overpowered by the smell of pot halfway through the set.
Photos didn't turn out quite as exceptionally shit as I thought they were going to. The lighting was very very ordinary, and they didn't look anythnig special on the viewscreen, so I gave up halfway though, and declared the gig a write-off. Upon getting home, they actually looked ok on the computer. I sort of went a bit 'if you can't beat 'em, join 'em' a couple of songs in, and went 'Well, if long exposure times means I'm going to get shitty blurring, I might as well go all out and do the artistic blur thing.' They all looked completely shit. I tried to 'capture the frenetic pace of Yatra' (how's THAT for a bit of wank, huh?) but Gaunt was facing the wrong way, and Yogi was badly lit, so it looked pretty shocking. Bleh.
Didn't talk to Nathan afterwards, cause I really couldn't be bothered, and I didn't have a reason to anyway. Was going to get him to sign a poster, but thought I'd wait for tonight so I could get Rossco to sign it too. Plus the fact my gold pen dried out after Dave McCormack used it (the hand of the devil sucked the life out of my pen), so I wanted to get another one.
Tonight is going to be so greatly fun. Fun fun fun. We'll be getting there early I think, to get a good possie and start downing the booze. Haha.
Tegan rang me before, saying 'I'm at Mills. I got some money for my birthday. Should I buy Sandytown?' 'Of course' I said 'Is Steve there? Make sure you buy it from Steve.' Obviously Mills is a bit slow today, cause I just got an email from Parkin, begging everyone to vote for him in the Net 50.
But anyway, photos from last night. Seven all up, I think. Nothing special, am hoping for better lighting and positioning tonight.
It's a worry when the photos of the support turn out better than the main act
I was far more interested in having those candles in all the shots than I was Gaunt
When I get bored of taking photos of his face, I take them of the guitar. And when I get bored of THAT, it goes to hands. I haven't become bored of the hands yet. I'm worried what I'd take photos of in their place, lol.
The night's full 'orchestra'
That be all. I'm hoping to be back tomorrow with a whole swag of great shots, and hilarious stories of drunken shenanigans. But I spose if the drunken shenanigans are that good, I won't be able to remember them, so...
