OB:con report, with maunderings on the local LARP scene

Sep 02, 2008 11:09

Con report in very brief: ran the Portal LARP that pixiecrack wrote, then played in four other LARP's, in which I had quite a lot of fun. Got to see my peeps, which was just wonderful. Had a great time.

My wife and I, in parallel to quite a few others, maundered a bit about the nature of the local LARP scene, which is essentially this: one plays with ( Read more... )

As I mentioned on your lovely wife's journal, you might want to talk to amywithani about this idea - or maybe not, as I think she's only thinking of running one LARP track and then a tabletop/board game track in parallel.

Depending on the timing, I don't know if I could write a brand new game in time for this, but I wouldn't mind either playtesting an idea for a *small* larp (not 25 people, I'm afraid - but I could run it in my hotel room, probably...) or re-running one of CC's previous events, especially as Logan, Alex and I have been talking about doing just that - casting our more-seasoned eyes over our older events and seeing if we can't improve them.

As a player or GM, I'd like to be kept in on the loop on this one. Thanks!

...I don't like you or that jerk of a husband of yours, so you're off the list, sorry.

=)

I will talk to P&A about this, if we have any pretensions of actually getting it off the ground. We will try to keep the guest list fairly tight, as we are well aware that there are certain people who set off others' alarms (or who set off ours/mine), and we want to have a very careful "vetting" process that involves vetoes from the GM teams, as well.

This will probably eventually involve some amount of drama, but I don't really care. =)

I left my comments on pixiecrack's journal, but I will say this... if you want to do a trilogy, mini-con seems like an ideal and stress free place to do it.

I'd like to vote for something more like 6 teams running 10-15 person LARPS, to cut down on the amount of time people have to sink into writing games, and to increase the odds of being able to re-run each of the games.

I have an old wiki I'd started (and since cleared) for just such a scheme at:
laircon.pbwiki.com
The invite key is "larping" if any of these discussions get closer to action.

Whatever mix works out best. I could see 3 4 hour slots (10-2, 3-7, 8-midnight) in a single day working out, and possibly being more convenient. Since the costs are the same, I'd almost rather do 2 one-day cons, then possibly reshuffle.

I also thought we might re-run some games in the same con (esp. if we shoot for a 2-day event with 6 time slots.)

15-20 person larps means we have to find 35 solid people minimum. 10-15 means we need 25, with the option of 3 games if we get 35.

Relatedly, I'm also keen on the idea of using something like this to run an ongoing game. Hopefully games every 3 months is enough to sort out the effects, come up with good plots for new characters, etc. Or possibly just write a few sequels without explicit "downtime."

Also, I still have that paycheck money theoretically sitting around for this sort of thing, once more initiative arrives.

Loved the Portal larp, as you know, and was very glad to hang out with you and pixiecrack. If there's anything I can do to help with your larpcon idea, you'll find me an enthusiastic volunteer.
