Short-subject DIY lyrics quiz SOLVED

May 09, 2008 10:22

The short-subject lyrics quiz has been solved. vvvexation resolved my fear that it was somehow way too hard by solving it quickly. It's as follows.

THE SNIPPETS

1.  You didn't wake up this morning because you didn't go to bed. You were watching the whites of your eyes turn red.

"This is the Day," by THE THE.2.  If I'd been out 'til quarter to three would you lock the door?

"When I'm Sixty-Four," by the BEATLES, identified by shoutingboy.

3.  Fearless men who jump and die, men who mean just what they say

"Ballad of the Green Berets," by Staff SERGEANT Barry Sadler, identified by shoutingboy (title) and kid_lit_fan (artist).

4.  Scarlet starlet and she's in my bed, a candidate for my soul mate bled. Push the trigger and pull the thread.

"Otherside," by the Red Hot Chili PEPPERS, identified by deirdremoon (who had a little trouble with the title).

5.  What if it was paradise? What if we were symphonies? What if I gave all my life to find some way to stand beside you?

"LONELY No More," by Rob Thomas, identified by deirdremoon, who was apparently not good with titles that day.

6.  Midnight, and I'm a-waitin' on the twelve-oh-five, hopin' it'll take me just a little farther down the line.

"Queen of HEARTS," by Juice Newton, identified by baronlaw.

7.  With my boyfriend, my laughing boyfriend, there's no beginning and there is no end. Time isn't present in that dimension.

"Genius of Love," by Tom Tom CLUB. changinganswers identified the band, but not the title.

8.  Catch a cannonball, now, t'take me down the line. My bag is sinkin' low and I do believe it's time to get back to Miss Annie. You know she's the only one.

"The Weight," by the BAND, identified by meopta (title) and shoutingboy (artist).

9.  Don't put me down babe. Can't you see I love you? Since you been gone I've been in a trance. This heart needs a....

"SECOND Chance," by .38 Special, identified by esmerel.

10. But I'm doing my very best dancing every time you're looking the other way. I could move out to the left for a while.

"Right on TRACK," by Breakfast Club, identified by esmerel, who picked up the obscure 80's tracks.

11. What would you think if I sang out of tune, would you stand up and walk out on me? Lend me your ears and I'll sing you a song and I'll try not to sing out of key.

This is, of course, "With a Little Help From My Friends," by the Beatles. vvvexation had to resort, with my permission, to checking out the album track order online, which I thought was only fair. I should have either included another clue to make it clear, or said that Googling the *theme*, once you knew what it was, was all right. My bad, but I don't think anyone else twigged to it.

The incorrect answers so far:

Go ahead, go ahead and light up the town
And baby, do everything your heart desires
Remember, I'll always be around

loupyone stumped me, but was not correct. kid_lit_fan ventured that the song is "Time Is on My Side," by the Rolling Stones.

Picture yourself on a train in a station,
With plasticine porters with looking glass ties,
Suddenly someone is there at the turnstile,
The girl with kaleidoscope eyes.

loupyone supplied "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds," by the Beatles, but still missed the mark.

The morning sun when its in your face really shows your age
But that don't worry me none in my eyes you're everything
I laughed at all of your jokes my love you didn't need to coax
Oh, Maggie I couldn't have tried any more
You lured me away from home, just to save you from being alone
You stole my soul and that's a pain I can do without

baronlaw supplied Rod Stewart's "Maggie May," and

Well honey me and the boys played cards all night.
There wasn't no hanky-panky, not a woman in sight.
I know I should called, and baby I.. I'm really sorry,
but get a cellular phone and then you won't have to worry.
You know how much I love ya, darling, and I'm ready to prove it.
And that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

While I couldn't identify the song, I knew it was wrong (and he volunteered that it's "That's My Story and I'm Sticking to It," by Collin Raye.

Clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right, here I am
Stuck in the middle with you.
And you started off with nothing
And you're proud that you're a self-made man
And your friends they all come crawling

meopta supplied "Stuck in the Middle," which I thought was a Bob Dylan tune, but she had the Jeff Healey version in mind. Still wrong, though.

And as I hung up the phone it occurred to me
He'd grown up just like me
My boy was just like me

"Cat's Cradle," by Cat Stevens (I'm guessing--and I was wrong, it's Harry Chapin, says esmerel), supplied by loupyone.

It's so dreamy
oh fantasy free me
So you can't see me (What, not at all?)
no not at all

"The Time Warp," from the Rocky Horror Picture Show soundtrack, supplied by changinganswers, is not correct.

I just can't help myself
I'm actin' like an animal
Now here's my scandal
I wanna get you home

changinganswers also supplied this one, which stumped me, but was still wrong.

Thanks for playing, and I hope you enjoyed it.
