America Adventure END + COMIC CON REPORT
So it’s been a while since I updated this, and in the interim I went to SDCC, left the lovely lynxgriffin’s company and flew back to JFK, spent the night in an airport and then flew to Bermuda, which is where I am now. I’m going to write a report on the con, SO THIS ENTRY IS PROBABLY GOING TO BE VERY LONG WINDED as it’s way overdue, but I shall try and keep it short!
But this picture basically summarizes my trip to San Diego:
There was a big Marvel Wall. The Young Avengers had a tiny space to themselves (Cassie and Vision were futher up and Billy WAS NO WHERE TO BE SEEN 8C), and it must have been FATE OR SOMETHING BECAUSE TOMMY WAS THE ONE WHO WAS GROUND LEVEL. FUCK YES I WAS SO HAPPY I DON'T EVEN.
HERE IS WHAT WE DID. If you’ve already read lynxgriffin’s report, it’s going to be pretty similar since we spent the majority of the weekend together except you get a running commentary by me, aren’t you lucky. :D
WEDNESDAY
Met up with the lovely corrielle and betwixt_worlds who were kind enough to drive us to San Diego! And since Lynx’s car had been totalled the night before by some drunk asshat, it was pretty nice of them to squish us all into one car. They were lovely people and I hope we can meet up again sometime and get into more heated discussion on how gay rights in America suck balls and make me want to flip tables.
WE THEN DROVE LIKE A BOSS. I think I fell asleep in the car for a bit, but I was awake when we past the building that literally looked like a giant pair of tits coming up out of the ground. Even the ‘nipples’ had lights on the tips and were flashing red. It was so fucking hysterical.
WE got to the hotel in pretty good time and basically dumped everything in the room and then went to the convention centre to get registered. Because Lynx was a PROFESSIONAL, I got the free badge, and it said PROFESSIONAL on it and I felt all special.
We then proceeded to attack the preview night. I was kind of amazed at the size of the room, since I’ve only ever been to EXPO and bought lots of things and spent way too much money. Things I got include: Christmas Town Sora playarts, gifts for people, AMPHAROS PLUSHIE, art books for final film inspiration, Hanna is not a Boy’s name badges and books and sketches from awesome artists, including Tessa Stone - Author of Hanna Is Not a Boy’s Name, Tracey Butler - author of Lackadaisy, Der-Shing Helmer - Author of the Meek, Pascal Campion, Amanda Connor, Skottie Young and David Colman. I actually sat chatting to Tessa for like half an hour, and tried not to gush about her. I got her talking about Ludo and how I’ve been watching her since then, and we really hit it off. She was SO NICE and gave me a hug when we left fdkjng.
Whilst we were looking around I also PLAYED THE DEMO FOR BIRTH BY SLEEP, which wasn’t actually a demo, but was the real game because the booth was sent the wrong version. I had no complaints though because it was so fucking good! I got to play in Toon Town as Ventus, which is basically a MINIGAME level, so I played Fruit Bash and the POD RACING. Fuck now I want a PSP. DAMN YOU SQUEENIX AND YOUR DEATHGRIP HOLD ON MY WALLET. And I think the squeenix guy who was tending the PSP’s was hitting on me, because every time I went back over the period of the weekend he always made a point of coming over and chatting to me whilst I was in the queue WHICH WAS NICE (:
After we’d fully explored the place we went back to the hotel, which was in old town so we had to take the trolley back. I’ve never been on a trolley before so I was so gleeful about it, and I am sure everyone else thought I was an idiot. Lynx kept warning me about the stopping and starting and I was like DUDE. LONDON UNDERGROUND and then she stopped.
THURSDAY
During the whole weekend I kept thinking the con was only four days, so because I spent most of my money on the preview night I kept getting confused as to what day it was because I am a derp. Lynx and I got up super early on Thursday to get in line for Hall H which was showing the Tron Panel. rebmakash was saving us a spot in line, and whilst we waited we played some DS. I’d left my games tin at home so I only got to battle people, but Reb and Lynx played Days on multiplayer so I watched. We got in and were pretty fucking close but had to sit through another panel before the one we wanted because hall fucking h. It’s a good thing the panel was something I was interested in seeing anyway, A Megamind panel with the majority of the actors on stage. Will Ferrel came out in full character cosplay which was fucking sweet.
THEN IT WAS THE TRON PANEL. So I hadn’t been that excited about the movie, but the shit we got shown? Sjnfgdkjfgn it needs to come out now! We got to see like 8 minutes of the movie, and i have to say that it looks really fucking pretty. We also did a really cool thing where they scattered people in the audience with mics and recorded the audience shouting things and stomping, and if the recording is good enough it’ll be in the final cut of the movie! WHICH IS PRETTY COOL! The whole cast was there too, and it’s so weird to see Obadiah Stane Jeff Bridges with hair.
After that we went out and I tracked down Christina Strain, who had Adrian Alphona at her table. Now if you don’t know who that is, they both worked on Runaways, Christina being a colourist and Adrian was the artist for the first run of Runaways. Adrian was also taking commissions. So I got him to draw me THIS FUCKING DRAWING of Molly and Tommy and I have to say, it was the best $40 I ever spent. FF LOOK AT IT ;A; fdskjgkhfhgfj. It was also my last $40 and I didn’t allow myself to buy anything else the rest of the con other than food.
We then went to a Character Creation panel which was a Disney one, and GLEN KEANE WAS THERE. They were talking about Tangled, and showed us some of the rough sequences and it was such a good panel! SUCH A GOOD ONE! I also got to meet GLEN FUCKING KEANE at the end, and he drew me a picture of the Beast and signed it ;A; I WAS IN SHOCK.
We parted ways with Reb and then met up with another one of Lynx’s friends and went to a FINAL FANTASY CONCERT. It wasn’t video games live. It was just Final Fantasy. They played a lot from games I hadn’t played which only makes me want to play them and then right at the end they got the VA of Vanille from Final Fantasy 13 to come out and announce the two FF13 songs they played. Spoiling everyone who hasn’t played the game in the process. BUT IT WAS SO NICE! And Vanille’s VA is super adorable! The only one who out adorabled her was Nobuo who was THERE, and came up on stage and actually got into the choir for the last song, which was One Winged Angel. HE WAS SO CUTE ;A;
FRIDAY
Me and Lynx got up extra early again but for different panels! I went to the Batman Brave and the Bold panel, and Lynx wanted to get in line for an Animation industry panel. The Batman panel was hysterical. They had the VA for both Batman and Aquaman there, and they showed a brand new episode that had Harley Quinn in it as well as BATMITE AND SINGING JOKER. IT WAS LOLARIOUS. It’s also the last panel they’re ever doing since the series is ending soon! This caused some improv Batman/Aquaman saying goodbye to each other which ended up getting really suggestive. I DIDN’T HAVE MY CAMERA ON I WAS SO ANNOYED AT MISSING IT but I am sure it’s on youtube somewhere. They also showed us a preview of Young Justice, which has Wally West as a main character! I am so excited for that, it looks HECKA interesting! Also there’s the fact that JESSE MCCARTNEY is voicing a 13 year old Robin. When they announced that, I am not joking, the whole hall laughed. I’m not sure that was the reaction they were hoping for BUT I AM MORE EXCITED LMFAO.
I left the ballroom that it was in to try and get into the Big Bang Theory panel, but after running across the convention hall, they told me that the line had already been closed (two hours before the panel) and there was no way I was getting in. This pissed me off because I could’ve stayed in the ballroom I was just in and sat through an Adventure Time panel (AND GOTTEN A FREE PENN HAT?? FUCK WHY DID I LEAVE?) but the line was way too long to try and get back in. So I went to the Animation Industry panel instead which was pretty interesting. Not encouraging to people who are trying to get into the industry though 8(
I located Lynx after this and we had lunch and then Lynx got some bad news and I spent the rest of the day trying to keep her spirits up. We met up with one of her comic contacts and had a long chat with him, which made me want to maybe start working on some comic ideas I’ve had for a while again to see if I can get them published. Sfkjng.
I decided to call it a night, and Lynx was going to go to another panel, but the meeting over ran a bit and she wouldn’t have been able to get in, so we went back and had noodles instead which was nice.
SATURDAY
WHAT DAY IS IT? HOW IS THIS CON STILL GOING? USUALLY CONS ARE ONLY TWO DAYS KSjNFFJK!!! Got up not early but was first in line for the panel me and Lynx were going to. It was a Storyboard and Film Illustrator panel, which wasn’t all that interesting. They just showed us their work and talked about it, not really... anything inspiring, which was a shame. I was also really really tired, so they were putting me to sleep.
I abandoned Lynx who was staying for the next panel and found Emily and Rae who were in line for Hall H. They didn’t get into the Harry Potter panel which they’d been in line since 8am for, but we got in after it. I wanted to see the Thor and Captain America panel which was at 6pm, and when we got in it was about 12ish. SO WE WERE GOING TO HALL SIT. It was pretty awesome. We saw lots of previews and a couple of interesting films that are coming out. Cowboys and Aliens (HARRISON FORD SHOWED UP LOOKING REALLY CONFUSED since he’s never been to comic con before) looks rad, as does Paul (Which is directed by Simon Pegg and looks fucking hysterical and is about comic book nerds who find an escaped alien who swears and is generally disgusting) AND SOMEONE GOT STABBED IN THE EYE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PANELS!! Well actually, that’s a lie, but that was the twitter rumor. What actually happened was that someone was angry at his friend and scratched his face, which caused a massive delay on the panels and I was getting so irritated 8( ALSO SOME JACKASS BROUGHT A FUCKING VUVUZELA INTO HALL H!!! He was right behind us and every time he used it I was like OMFG I WANT TO RAM THAT THING DOWN HIS THROAT!!!! OMFG!!! >:CCCCC WHO DOES THAT?
But the wait was worth it, because not only did Thor look fucking awesome and NOT ONLY DID THE GUY PLAYING CAP LOOK FUCKING RIPPED (he looked like he’d been working out for the role and pumped his muscles up so quickly that he didn’t have any shirts that fit him, seriously that shirt was so tight I was scared he was going to break out of it.) AND THAT MOVIE LOOKED SWEET BUT. FDJKNDF. THEY BROUGHT OUT SAMUEL L. JACKSON. AND THEN ROBERT DOWNEY FUCKING JUNIOR. AND THE ENTIRE CAST OF THE AVENGERS. Omfg everyone jumped up out of their seats and had kittens we were all screaming and were so excited. MARVEL YOU PLEASE ME SO MUCH!!! THEY SHOWED US A TEASER OF THE LOGO AND WE ALL HAD MORE KITTENS SFKJNGKJGD I WAS SO HAPPY. Best day ever.
After that we went to a restaurant and got some food and were rejoined by Lynx and then proceeded to tell her the story of epic win that was a day spent in hall h.
SUNDAY
Me and Emily got up really fucking early. I mean like 5am. The reason? Supernatural Panel in Ballroom 20. Followed by a Glee panel. We were going to be in Ballroom 20 all fucking day again AND WE DIDN’T CARE. Lynx and Rae were like FUCK THAT NOISE and slept in and checked out of the hotel for us.
Oh my god it was so worth it. The Supernatural panel showed us a scene from season six with CRAWLEY!!! OMG HE IS BACK AND AS FABULOUS AS EVER I LOVE HIM SO MUCH!! The whole cast was there too, both Jensen and Jared, Misha Collins and Jim Beaver, as well as Eric Kripke and one of the writers who’s name I forget and Sera Gamble who is taking over this season as director. Kripke is actually NOT A DOUCHE. I was expecting a douchebag, but HE WAS SO FUNNY and kept teasing all the actors. At one point Jared was like UM ERIC WE WANT TO TALK TOO 8( and Kripke was like WHAT JARED. WHAT IS SO IMPORTANT THAT YOU NEED TO SPEAK NOW? GEEZ and Jared was just like ... NVM /SHUFFLES AWKWARDLY IN CHAIR AND IS QUIET.
The Glee panel was good too! The actors that play Santana and Brittany were there, and they outwardly told everyone they ship Santana/Brit and the writers were like WE ARE TRYING TO DECIDE IF WE SHOULD MAKE THEM KISS.... and the whole crowd had kittens. They covered a lot of awesome subjects and talked about the second season, and what specials they are doing, and a rocky horror episode was hinted at.
All and all, getting up at 5am was so worth it. And we were really lucky, because the line was fucking huge and we were actually INSIDE straight away. The queue SNAKED its way outside of the building, and when we came out of the panel it was still heaving with people trying to get in and we were like YOU FOOLS YOU DIDN’T GET UP AT CRAZY-O-CLOCK.
We then met up with Lynx and Rae again, and Emily and Rae explored the dealers hall, and I passed out under a plant whilst we waited to go home. WE THEN GOT IN-AND-OUT (which I might add is DELICIOUS and I wish we had them in England) and drove home!
So much for keeping that short, uh.
Oh man though, IT WAS SUCH A GOOD EXPERIENCE! I really want to go again next year, this time armed with business cards and portfolios I think, since I had a couple of people asking for my card and I didn’t have any with me. Derp. I met so many amazing people and had SUCH A GOOD TIME DKJNF ;____;
So about a day after we get back from comic con, I was flying out of Cali and back to JFK to finish my American Leg of this trip. I cannot express how much fun it’s been. I’ve met so many people I never thought I’d have the chance to meet, and I am so appreciative of all the people who housed me and came to see me. I love you all and I hope if you’re ever my side of the world I can return the favour. Seriously thank you all so much <3 <3
Spending the night in JFK was pretty uneventful. I bought a redbull and downed it, and stayed in the baggage collection lobby. The only working outlet was in a Dunkin Donuts, and the people behind the counter were kind enough to let me sit in the store on the floor all night. Of course, the only working outlet had to be RIGHT NEXT TO THE FRIDGE so I was fucking FREEZING all night. My will to be warm was overridden by my will to have internet though. Seriously, THIS IS WHERE I WAS SITTING FOR ABOUT 7 HOURS OMFG.
BUT NOW I AM IN BERMUDA doing family things and working my way through the entire Temeraire series (Currently on book three, already have a Maximus muse FUCK). I’ve had a bit of a turbulent time here, but that’s saved for another journal because I’d rather keep this one as upbeat as I felt coming back from comic con. Needless to say, I can’t wait till I get to go home on the 15th. I miss all my English dudes and I want to sleep in my own bed!

Me and Emily got up really fucking early. I mean like 5am. The reason? Supernatural Panel in Ballroom 20. Followed by a Glee panel. We were going to be in Ballroom 20 all fucking day again AND WE DIDN’T CARE. Lynx and Rae were like FUCK THAT NOISE and slept in and checked out of the hotel for us.
Oh my god it was so worth it. The Supernatural panel showed us a scene from season six with CRAWLEY!!! OMG HE IS BACK AND AS FABULOUS AS EVER I LOVE HIM SO MUCH!! The whole cast was there too, both Jensen and Jared, Misha Collins and Jim Beaver, as well as Eric Kripke and one of the writers who’s name I forget and Sera Gamble who is taking over this season as director. Kripke is actually NOT A DOUCHE. I was expecting a douchebag, but HE WAS SO FUNNY and kept teasing all the actors. At one point Jared was like UM ERIC WE WANT TO TALK TOO 8( and Kripke was like WHAT JARED. WHAT IS SO IMPORTANT THAT YOU NEED TO SPEAK NOW? GEEZ and Jared was just like ... NVM /SHUFFLES AWKWARDLY IN CHAIR AND IS QUIET.
The Glee panel was good too! The actors that play Santana and Brittany were there, and they outwardly told everyone they ship Santana/Brit and the writers were like WE ARE TRYING TO DECIDE IF WE SHOULD MAKE THEM KISS.... and the whole crowd had kittens. They covered a lot of awesome subjects and talked about the second season, and what specials they are doing, and a rocky horror episode was hinted at.
All and all, getting up at 5am was so worth it. And we were really lucky, because the line was fucking huge and we were actually INSIDE straight away. The queue SNAKED its way outside of the building, and when we came out of the panel it was still heaving with people trying to get in and we were like YOU FOOLS YOU DIDN’T GET UP AT CRAZY-O-CLOCK.
We then met up with Lynx and Rae again, and Emily and Rae explored the dealers hall, and I passed out under a plant whilst we waited to go home. WE THEN GOT IN-AND-OUT (which I might add is DELICIOUS and I wish we had them in England) and drove home!
So much for keeping that short, uh.
Oh man though, IT WAS SUCH A GOOD EXPERIENCE! I really want to go again next year, this time armed with business cards and portfolios I think, since I had a couple of people asking for my card and I didn’t have any with me. Derp. I met so many amazing people and had SUCH A GOOD TIME DKJNF ;____;
So about a day after we get back from comic con, I was flying out of Cali and back to JFK to finish my American Leg of this trip. I cannot express how much fun it’s been. I’ve met so many people I never thought I’d have the chance to meet, and I am so appreciative of all the people who housed me and came to see me. I love you all and I hope if you’re ever my side of the world I can return the favour. Seriously thank you all so much <3 <3
Spending the night in JFK was pretty uneventful. I bought a redbull and downed it, and stayed in the baggage collection lobby. The only working outlet was in a Dunkin Donuts, and the people behind the counter were kind enough to let me sit in the store on the floor all night. Of course, the only working outlet had to be RIGHT NEXT TO THE FRIDGE so I was fucking FREEZING all night. My will to be warm was overridden by my will to have internet though. Seriously, THIS IS WHERE I WAS SITTING FOR ABOUT 7 HOURS OMFG.
BUT NOW I AM IN BERMUDA doing family things and working my way through the entire Temeraire series (Currently on book three, already have a Maximus muse FUCK). I’ve had a bit of a turbulent time here, but that’s saved for another journal because I’d rather keep this one as upbeat as I felt coming back from comic con. Needless to say, I can’t wait till I get to go home on the 15th. I miss all my English dudes and I want to sleep in my own bed!
