a friend of mine theorized mostly that since tommy doesn't have an adult figure in his life (that we know of??) he just

resorts to doing the "THOMAS MIDDLE NAME SHEPHERD YOU SAVE THOSE PEOPLE RIGHT NOW" on himself

either that or the writers got distracted WOOPS
