Does anyone write fic that is not porn anymore? No, it's a legit question, I want to know. Especially if you're someone I've not known for more than 5 years.
Now, let me make one thing clear - I'm not going to dictate what people should write. Y'all can write whatever the heck that tickles your fancy. I do. This is not a matter of who should write what... but on that note, as a reader, I'm allowed to be picky about what I want to read, and sadly, I've not been finding a lot that tickles my fancy as a reader.
Oh yes, I do subscribe to the mantra of "if you don't like it, click the X or Back button and don't read" or "heed the warnings/pairings before you read". Sure, I do all that. My beef here is that I've been doing a LOT of that lately... and it's starting to irk me because I really DO want something good to read.
Ok, to make another thing clear, I'm not anti-slash either. I like slash. I WRITE slash. So this is not about slash either. Does ANYONE write fic that's not all about one bot being someone else's sex slave or everything just leading to sex?
It's just... There are other genres out there, too! Drama, Action/Adventure, Comedy, just a Day in the Life Of, Horror... there's more (or there used to be more) than just sex and porn and non-con/rape and in general two bots getting together to shag or romance each other. Most of the stuff I see on my timeline now is all R or NC-17 rated for porn. It's everywhere. I'm sure there's good porn as much as there is bad, but that's not my issue. My issue is that's all there is, at least from what I've seen.
And yes it's hot, and sexy, and all that good stuff when it's well written, but you know what they say about too much of a good thing? Yeah.
I mean, just like any human being, sometimes I'm just not in the mood for sex! Even if it's just reading about it.
Where are all the comedies? Stuff like MoonMadKitty's "CSI Ark" or Starhorse's "Blue 42"? Where are those? Do people still write those?
Where are the beautiful sad fics like Princess Artemis' "Silver Thread" or Tirya56's "No Longer Mourn" series that had me crying for hours.
How about all the epic action/drama fics? Has anyone read TL Arens' "Testament" epic? Dragoness_Eclectic's "Dead Mech Escape"? Anyone?
I miss the Gen fics... the 'Day in the Life Of' fics that just take us through the typical shenanigans of the Ark for instance. Stuff like Shades' "Communique" or Tactile_Contact's "Though, Vicariously, Do I Live" which was a beautiful one-shot about Roller of all mechs.

So that's my beef. Where's all the fic like that *points up* I see them so rarely lately cos it seems to me like everyone's busy trying to write the next big steamy smut-fic. And again, while that's all well and good, sometimes it's not what I want to read. Sometimes I just want to laugh, or cry, or sit on the edge of my chair wondering if Mirage is going to save the girl before the bridge collapses.
Recently I broke up with a girl I loved very much. I was heart-broken. I retreated to my TF fandom hoping to find something to read that would let me escape for a while. I wanted something to cheer me up, make me laugh, remind me I could still be happy. The last things I wanted to read about was sex or non-con, or even about romance. Guess what... couldn't find anything. Ended up re-reading some old fics.
Sometimes it makes me sad that I have to wander off to other fandoms like Glee and Dalton and Avengers just to find something nice to read. It makes me sad because TF has always been my first love. It's where I really started writing properly, after reading a ton of great, well-written fics. It's where I'd read those and tell myself, "I'm going to make my writing and my stories as good as Starhorse's or Nightwind's" or "I'm going to write that epic journey-story adventure that's going to rival TL Arens' epic series."
Writers are readers, too, and sometimes the greatest inspiration for writing fics is reading someone else's and thinking, "hmmm... wow... this has given me an awesome idea!" or "That's an interesting take on said character. I want to try something for this character."
(I'm not saying there aren't good writers now, btw, there are; some of you I'm good friends with and have known for years.)
I'm not that picky. I just really look for a story with good grammar, spelling, characterization and plot... If I really haven't been looking in the right place and these other, non-porn, fics do exist, please drop me links (especially if it's about the Autobots, I love the good guys :D)
Again, I'm not telling anyone what to write, just what I'd personally like to read sometimes. And you can say, oh if I want fics like that, I should just go write it myself. Well that's no fun at all is it? Cos while I can and have, sometimes I really want to see someone else's take on things, read someone else's words for a change, not mine.
C'mon guys... broaden your horizons, challenge yourself with other things.
