I posted this as a comment on
kurt_blaine, but since it was so long, and I surprised myself, I'm just gonna throw it up here for shits and giggles.
All my thoughts concerning the Klaine scenes in this episode since they're the only things I care about really. Many many spoilers for ep20 "Prom Queen"
= Kurt is a better friend to Mercedes than she's been to him since he came back. He looks genuinely surprised/concerned that she's not going to prom, and is the first one to get up to go talk to her after she storms out.
= People have been saying that Kurt doesn't seem to care after Blaine tells him about what happened at his old school. I beg to differ if you watch Kurt's facial expressions and how he sits up that bit straighter when Blaine gets into the story, and the expression in his eyes when the bit about the bashing comes out.
Maybe it's me reading too much into it, maybe not, but his comments after about this being the perfect chance for Blaine to come to McK and confront his bully fears... maybe it's all he can think of in that moment that sounds right to say to Blaine, because he's not sure what else he can say as comfort, so instead he tries to make a lighthearted comment while he gathers himself together.
Also, just realizing that we don't really know the details of that fight. Did Blaine fight back then? Did the other guy? Did Blaine have to protect himself and the other guy? Did the other guy have to protect himself and Blaine?! What happened to the other guy? We don't know... Maybe what happened there was the basis of Blaine's advice to Kurt in NBK? "I ran, Kurt" - ran figuratively to Dalton? Perhaps. Literally tried to run from the fight and abandoned his partner? It's certainly possible in hindsight.** (I will come back to the 'running' bit later)
= Kurt doesn't force Blaine into saying yes. He gives Blaine an out - to go to the movies and forget about Prom - and Blaine sees the out, but still makes the decision to go with Kurt precisely because Kurt put the choice in his hands. "I'm crazy about you = I love you and I will go with you". Kurt even asks him just to double check "I'll take that as a yes?" so that he doesn't just jump to conclusions, to see if Blaine is certain that this is what he wants to do.
= I like that it's the other Glee girls that have asked Kurt to help them with prom dresses and not Rachel and Mercedes (yes, I see the irony here that his two closest friends probably don't want/need his opinion). Tina values his opinion rather highly it seems, and I am clapping like a seal to see him and Lauren interacting and him being nice to her/helping her, and she does go with his color choice. Also, they're now proven Klainers.
= I think Blaine digs the kilt if his smile, and the way he runs his eyes up and down Kurt are any indication. And I think that had he worn it to any other occasion Blaine would have been fine with it... Also think he asked Finn about performing because he feels safe on stage, like the stage is the one place people can't hurt him or touch him, and where he can let go a little.
= I can totally see where Blaine and Burt are coming from. Kurt loves drawing attention to himself, but Blaine knows from experience that not all attention is good attention. Again, we really don't know what happened at that dance of Blaine's. Did he somehow draw attention to himself and his date back then that got them beaten up? "We don't want to give anyone a reason to cause any trouble". Is he speaking from experience? We really don't know. Plus, his body language - he's got his arms and legs crossed the whole time after Kurt and Burt start talking about the outfit. Before it they rest on his lap.
= The editing and splicing of this scene is a bit off. In the wider shot, after Kurt leaves, we do see Blaine uncrossing his legs and making as if to stand and go after him, but in the close-up he hasn't moved.
= Karofsky... the least I say about him the better. Still don't like him. Still don't want him near Kurt or Blaine. Kurt's talk about how no one's done anything to him though... just made me think, oh bb, you think that it's going to be like Dalton don't you? You can just see that he still has that Dalton sense of security around him, that no one's going to touch him.
= Pre-announcement... I really do think they had some kind of talk back at the Hudmel house. They do seem happy here. I think its likely they've just arrived and they're hanging out on the fringes to see what's going on first and taking it all in. I know I do that when I arrive at a party - just hang back and see what's going on before diving in. As for the slow dance... awkwardness? maybe they just didn't like the song? XD
= I honestly thought Lauren looked like she wanted to kill someone for Kurt when they announced him as PQ. Besides her, I think Brittany was the only one to have some kind of reaction... Well aside from Blaine tearing out of there like wildfire. Sidenote, I like that they pulled all the sound from the scene so we could hear the urgency and tone in Blaine's voice.
= The way Blaine was moving to Kurt when he was initially crying, I think he did want to hug him. Maybe he did while they cut to Rachel and the other girls. Even if he didn't, possible reason: the entire school has just called him a girl. Blaine taking Kurt in his arms and coddling him like he's some damsel in distress might have made it worse, and shown that Blaine also treats him like a girl.
So maybe Blaine realizes this, along with the fact that yes, Kurt is strong, and lets him rage it out, but still stays there to listen and make sure he'll be okay. And I think he knows exactly the right buttons to push on Kurt when he asks him if he wants to go? Because he possibly saw that Kurt was giving up and instead gives him a little nudge to again "fight" back. And it works. The look on Blaine's face when Kurt decides to go back in is pretty much, 'Ahhh.. THERE'S my boy'.
= I love you, Brittany. Thank you for noticing someone else was having a worse night. I was hpping for a little more bitchyness from Kurt when he went up on stage, but maybe then he remembered what Burt said about haters needing a match, and what Blaine said about being bashed after the dance. So he decided not to stir the pot further.
= Can I say I LOVE the timing of the song and Blaine stepping in to dance with Kurt? I don't think it was a coincidence that the "OOH YEAH!" is sung just after Blaine says "Excuse me.." and "You can dance..." just before Kurt says "Yes, yes you may." (I'm weird that I notice these things, yes). And the body language here... just... BRAVO, BOYS!
They start off so slow and Kurt's still all apprehensive and nervous and uncomfortable... and Blaine... Blaine starts to dance them a little more and gives him one of his goofy smiles to make Kurt smile... Just.. I CAN'T!!! Just watch that scene! How he dips him a little and really starts to get into it. Part of it is to make Kurt feel better, part of it is just Blaine saying "Fuck it, I'm DANCING WITH MY BOYFRIEND AND YOU ALL CAN'T DO SHIT".
And this is a whole bunch of tl;dr so I'll shut up now. I wrote a freakin' essay didn't I? OTL
On the whole? I honestly HATE that Kurt had to go through all this shit. I just wish he'd go back to Dalton and be happy there because over there, people actually liked him and would have never done this incredibly fucked up thing to him
