Where Jo waxes lyrical (haha!) about the LOTR Symphony: 6 Movements for Chorus and Orchestra.
OMFG! That was so fucking awesome!
Okay so I nit-picked a few things here and there, but overall, it was just pure WIN. SO MUCH WIN! They had two foreign choirs from Slovenia combined with a local children's choir and the Singapore Festival Orchestra. Also had a couple of soloists.
They did alot of my favorite musical moments from the movies that made my inner fangirl squee in delight, and all the classic pieces that LOTR is known for. All the themes were in there! Shire, Fellowship, Isengard, ROHAN!!!, Mordor, Gollum, Rivendell, Lothlorien, GONDOR!!!
They had a guy on the hardinger fiddle for the Rohan theme!!!!!
I have all sorts of new love for the Isengard theme.
Ah hahaha, when they played the theme from the Battle of Amon Hen where the Fellowship fight the Uruks of Isengards, when the drums and horns came on, pretty much everyone sat to attention, it was THAT powerful. The Bridge of Khazad Dum with the drums and the male choir.. hooo boy, and the Lothlorien war theme... I had goosebumps. I teared when they did the Grey Havens farewell theme.
They had a soloist perform Evenstar!!! She was a good soprano, but I thought she sang Gollum's Song a little too purely - that's supposed to sound all gnarly and twisted, but her voice made it a little bit sweet. She also sang Into The West, which was... alright, but it doesnt suit her voice considering she's a pure soprano and Annie Lennox is more in the alto range. So when she tried to sing on the lower notes she got a bit pitchy.
I wish they'd put in the piece that plays when the Rohirrim fight the Wargs, from TTT. I felt that was sorely lacking there and I would have loved to hear them sing the Old English lyrics. The second half did feel a bit rushed to be honest, considering they squished TTT and ROTK together, and devoted the whole first half to FOTR.
The Nazgul theme still gave me the chills.
Esplanade, you need to bring in more of these movie symphony concerts.
