Some Cafe in Paris | Monday Morning

Aug 15, 2011 11:29

It was finals week again, which should have meant Caroline was camped out at her desk with colored index cards and a variety of colorful pens, highlighters, and post-it tabs. But no, she was still on a relaxing vacation. The second night in Paris had been welcome, if slightly stressful as Caroline fretted over the potential of missing finals ( Read more... )

Jake recognised that look, but he decided to finish his pain au chocolat first.

"Relax," he said finally when his mouth wasn't as full. "We'll take the portal and there will be plenty of time to get to your first class."

"I'm relaxed," she insisted, covering her mouth with her hand as she had taken yet another over-zealous bite to compensate for not having any blood since Saturday morning. "See? This is me relaxed."

It was just like her pre-freakout. Weird how that worked.

Both his eyebrows went up, because did she seriously think he didn't know her better by now?

"Babe, you look like you're going to burst if I so much as point at you."

Her forehead crinkled between her eyebrows as she sipped at her coffee. "I do not. I'm simply concerned in a perfectly normal and healthy manner." Unlike some people.

She was never concerned in a normal and healthy manner. Normal and healthy just didn't apply to her at all.

Not that he said that out loud, but trying to reason wasn't going to get him anywhere right now. "Sure sure." He sipped his hot chocolate.

Yeah, those words had her sitting up a little straighter and turning too look anywhere but at him. Of course Jake wouldn't understand, she was stupid to think he would. He didn't have to care about his GPA or staying on the good side of professors or getting hungry and biting a tourist. It was totally unfair.

He sighed as she ignored him and he put his cup down. "It's going to be fine. We've got a back up plan if need be. I'm not going to let anything happen."

No, the GPA he didn't care about, but at least he was aware of the last part.

She rolled her eyes and shook her head. "You mean, I'm not going to let anything happen." Because she was going to keep it together. Which was why she was she had ordered half the menu and was slowly consuming it all. "Not that I'm worried."

"Right," he agreed and he shoved the rest of his plate to her side of the table as he leaned back in his chair.

"So, Mister Who-Cares-About-School, what do you think our cooking final's going to look like?" Caroline asked, still keeping her eyes on her food and far from him. Mostly because she was trying to figure out if he was mad at her for not packing any blood or just didn't trust her to stay in line.

Jake shrugged. "It will involve food and cooking something," he replied, not really giving a fuck what the final was like. It was Summer school for crying out loud, that meant he cared even less.

"Guess I don't have to worry about you being a curve breaker," she murmured into her coffee cup. "God, remind me to ask what you're taking before I sign up next term." Then he wouldn't have to deal with her in an academic way.

He was staring at her now, wondering exactly where this was going to end if she wasn't to avoid having him in the same class now. "I'm sorry my lack of enthusiasm for classes I won't do anything with offends you."

Who said anything about doing something with classes? Caroline was mostly just obsessed with how she looked on paper, not actually with learning something. "Yeah? Well, I'm sorry I care at all about my future when you obviously could not care less."

"So?" he asked. "What does it matter? I don't give a fuck, that's my problem. We've got a portal and we'll be back in time for your finals. You'll ace it. You actually work hard and you're smart. You're going to be fine. So what does it matter if I fail?"

"It doesn't," she sighed, resting her cheek on her hand. There was no point arguing with him if he didn't want even the option of a future that wasn't hanging in La Push with his pack. "Of course it doesn't have anything to do with me."
