[Background]

Zack was born and raised in the small village of Gongaga, where he spent the first 14-years of his life as an only child with a mother and a father. Having always been somewhat of a energetic "puppy" Zack would often explore the vast areas around his hometown, always in search of something more exciting. Eventually, he found out about SOLDIER and ShinRa and it didn't take long for him to realize that a SOLDIER was what he wanted to be. After managing to persuade his parents that this was truly what he wanted, Zack set out for Midgar, hoping to fulfill his dreams of becoming a hero.

Upon reaching Midgar, Zack quickly did everything in his power to get accepted into the SOLDIER program and it didn't take long for the very talented boy to make it SOLDIER 2nd Class. Along the way, Zack made numerous friends such as Kunsel. Zack also got chosen by Angeal to become his student in the arts of combat and other SOLDIER-essential talents. Zack's and Angeal's relationship also grew to a friendship level.

It wasn't long until the Wutai War was in fool bloom and Zack, along with his mentor Angeal, was sent to the warring country on a mission to try and find the missing SOLDIER 1st Class Genesis Rhapsodos and the SOLDIERS he took with him. The mission wasn't successful and furthermore Zack was hit with a more personal problem when Angeal also went MIA. Not sure if the blame was on the Wutanese, Zack was forced to return to Midgar alone. Upon returning to ShinRa, Zack is promoted to SOLDIER 1st Class. Soon however, it was discovered that Angeal, like the now ex-SOLDIER Genesis, had planned on abandoning ShinRa due to Genesis' degeneration that was slowly but surely starting to effect Angeal as well. This lays out a number of unanswered questions that all lead back to both Genesis' and Angeal's childhood and it's up to Zack to try and stop the two whilst also trying to save his dear friend.

The web of lies and deceit eventually grows into something so dark that Zack is forced to engage Angeal in combat when the once-mentor refuses to listen to Zack's pleas of reason. Though Zack comes out of the battle victorious, there isn't much to celebrate. Receiving the Buster Sword from Angeal, Zack swears to uphold the blades honour and pride.

During these troubling times, light shines in the sidelines as Zack finds comfort in a new friend; Aerith Gainsborough. Having come crashing down through a church's old roof (thanks to a mission) Zack wakes up on a patch of beautiful flowers and a very pretty face that he quickly calls an angel. It doesn't take long for the two to become fast friends and eventually even dearer as Zack often goes down to the slums to visit the flower-selling girl.

Zack Fair's final mission comes in the shape of a routine reactor check to Nibelheim. Accompanied by the ShinRa legend, Sephiroth, whom Zack had gotten to know better during the past few years, and a cadet called Cloud Strife who stood out on a mission in Modeoheim and whom Zack also befriended, eventually leading the two to becoming most likely even best friends, they head out north towards the quiet town. Nibelheim, also being Cloud's hometown, is a cold mountain village with a very eerie, almost shunning atmosphere. Thanks to Cloud's knowledge of the place and a tour guide, Tifa Lockhart, Zack and his party make it to the apparently malfunctioning reactor. It is in the reactor however, that disaster starts to rumble. Sephiroth, burdened with questions about his birth, locks himself into a ShinRa guest house, after having seen the reactor and what was being created in its shadows. About a week later, Sephiroth snaps and sets the village on fire, killing most of its residents. Zack, confronting Sephiroth in the reactor, tries to reason with the silver-haired man only to realize that there is no other out come in the whole situation but to fight the crazed man. Unfortunately Zack is defeated and cast harshly aside, broken on the staircase. He hands Cloud the Buster Sword, asking his young friend to do the impossible; kill Sephiroth. Somehow, Cloud manages to do just that. The situation doesn't turn for the better though, as Prof. Hojo captures both Zack and Cloud, taking them as test subjects for the next four years.

Breaking out of the basement that had been their prison for so long, Zack carries a Mako-poisoned Cloud Strife far from the haunting, rebuilt town of Nibelheim. On the run for the next year or so, Zack faces himself with one more task; defeating the still alive Genesis Rhapsodos. The final showdown takes place in the barren lands that used to be Banora, and it is there that Zack finally concludes what began so long ago.

Making their way towards Midgar, Zack's trip is cut short just outside of the city, in the Wastelands. There, faced with an entire army of ShinRa troops, Zack is shot down and left to die. It is here that he gives Cloud Strife, who was hidden away, the Buster Sword, telling his friend to carry on with his life as he is Zack's living legacy.

”Hey, would you say I became a hero?"

Zack joins the Lifestream, ready to call it a day. When the planet faces Meteor, Zack helps Aerith prevent the catastrophe with Holy and even later, after the facing the Remnants, Zack and Aerith both remind Cloud that he's life isn't over yet and that he'll never be alone.

[Personality]

“Boy oh boy... the price of freedom is steep."

Zack has always been an easy going, cheerful and charming person, often lighting up people's moods with a wink and a smile. His positive attitude towards most situations often helping him and his friends get through. He's a pillar, if you will, for his dear ones, ready to lend a hand at any given moment. Though it needs to be said that Zack has seen the harsher and more cruel side of life thanks to the Wutai War and the most of the major events leading up to his death. Zack has grown up from being the happy, even naive, little puppy to a still good-natured but also serious when he needs to be type of man. He doesn't expect the worst to always happen but when something does go wrong Zack is mentally ready for just about anything.

With his good spirits, Zack is also a very strong and caring person, often looking out for his friends, new or old. Even when Angeal was corrupted by the degeneration, Zack still believed until his mentor’s last breath that Angeal had never truly been evil, just misguided. He always hopes for the best in people, listens to their problems and is ready to offer any and all the help he can.

Zack is also known to be a bit of a flirt. Confident in himself and his abilities, one would often find him chatting with his fellow female friends, asking them out during the most oddest of times. It's all in good fun though as it is in his nature to be charming sometimes without himself even noticing it.

Zack claims to not be scared of anything. And this is true, partly. While not one for fearing anything physical, like monsters or demons, Zack, perhaps, mostly fears losing his friends, or having something happen to them. He prides himself in his relationships, often holding most people he considers close near to his heart. This can also be his downfall. Zack will easily give his own life to save that of a friend.

And that is, ultimately, how he meets his end.

While a blessing most of the time, sometimes Zack's is almost over-cheerful personality gets him in trouble. This often leads to him not paying much attention to what is said, until he is faced with having to deal with whatever was told. While this trait was more common in his youth, Zack is still rather breezy-minded even while older and more experienced in all aspects of life.

[Specialties/Abilities]

”SOLDIER 2nd Class Zack, on the job!"

Hey now, come on, everyone has seen Zack's cool train opening scene, right? Okay, now for the real deal!

Zack was, during his career in SOLDIER, noted to be one of the most promising rising stars in both swordsmanship and materia handling. Quick to learn the art of the heavy blade, Zack's talent is accompanied by pure strength and good agility which makes him an opponent worth fighting. Zack is overall well rounded in his abilities, being both strong and fast, more so than a normal fighter which would be thanks to the high Mako dozes he, like every other SOLDIER, has received in the program.

>>CHAIN SLASH: A sword based attacked consisting of quick slashes that are chained for effectiveness and power. Coming from different angles, the blows are bound to hit some weak points, whether it be to break through armour or go for the kill itself.

>>OMNISLASH: An attack in the works, not quite there yet with this one. Though it is easy to model into something faster and simpler, thus making it usable in battle at certain times. Zack never got the chance to perfect this attack, losing his life at such an early age that he did.
