It has been suggested that we explain a little about ourselves on this journal. Normally I wouldn't be in the habit of making certain events publicly known, but after seeing the Nexus (
sages_of_chaos) I've come to realise the chances are good that anyone really wanting to know at least some of our secrets could probably find them out from a comic book or television show. After that, some degrees of discretion become moot.
The events leading to where we are now began, I suppose, in Egypt... with Afzel. Afzel was a 3,000 year old sorceror who had stolen a certain secret of magic from a group of sorcerors who worshipped the demon-lord Sutekh. Sutekh, being a demon, does not like to share his secrets, and promptly sent his Servants to hunt down Afzel. Unfortunately for myself and several of my friends, Afzel was later mugged just outside of our puppet theatre in Paris.
This was in 1902, and I was in my twenties. It was Elsa who found the sorceror... she'd attended the performance that evening and happened to see the mugging as she was leaving the theatre. Her calls for help drove off the muggers, and then she came to the door looking for help.
We allowed Afzel to stay in the back room of the theatre while we waited to see if he would recover from his injuries. He regained conciousness while I was the only other person there, checking on props and puppets for the next performance. He told me he was a wizard, that he was 3,000 years old, that he was dying, and that he intended to teach me the magic he had stolen before he died. Naturally, I thought he was insane.
Then the puppets I'd left on the workshop table started to move by themselves. It was Afzel making them move then, his will, using them as puppets. He had them paint glyphs of protection for the doors of the theatre, meant to hide him from Sutekh's Servants.
I think I was too stunned to protest further when he insisted again on teaching me magic. I wonder, though... if I had known what his teachings would lead to, would I have accepted? Or given the old bastard a sound kick out the door...
